What are people’s thoughts on Simon Bridges Intercity commute?
He sure seems to be getting a lot of ‘love’ at The Guardian at the moment for some reason…
One puff piece by a Charlotte Graham-McLay
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/05/simon-bridges-the-former-prosecutor-who-faces-his-greatest-trial-against-nice-person-ardern
and a piece he wrote all by himself
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/apr/03/in-the-absence-of-parliament-we-must-ensure-new-zealands-response-to-covid-19-is-the-best-it-can-be
Speaking of which the first ‘Zoomed’ meeting of the Opposition led Covid-19 Response oversight select committee was initially headlined by Stuff in their live coverage was headlined:Live: Simon Bridges grills Ashley Bloomfield on coronavirus response
I emailed the editorial section to say that that did not accurately portray what was happening and was a tad OTT – so they changed it to:
Live: Special committee scrutinises Government’s coronavirus response
Hah! That’s way more accurate – that wasn’t too hard was it – gotta watch that creeping spin.
The other thing with the meeting was all the ‘face touchers’ – I emailed 6 of the worst offenders (cross-party it must be said) during the meeting asking them to try and set better examples, you know ‘lead by example’ – 2 responded and acknowledged the point 2 others noticeably modified their behaviour – Simon never responded or altered his ‘digital interface’ – c’est la vie
We all need guidelines that are mirrored on high and easy to understand – luckily we now have an easy new ‘social distancing’ measure – ’The Lying Trump’ he is 6ft you just have to imagine having a ring of flat Trumps around you at all times.

Bludger is a pretty negative self identity.
Thanks Steven, I agree and regret my callous choice of words.
I am not sure what day it is but hope you are having a good one.

I did not know his family position.
Still service in a crisis require some sacrifice, as the rest of the country (except the Crusaders, the West Coast Cop, Surfers, MPs and the other chosen few) are doing. -
A venture worth supporting: a compilation album to provide financial support for Ivan of the Nivara Lounge, the great music venue in downtown Hamilton.

Wait up, I'll come with you.

I can't seem to do it on my phone, but would a kind soul uplink Dean Martins version of "I'm forever blowing bubbles" in honour of Simon Bridges dissonance regarding our current condition?

Loving the Lockdown letters at The Spinoff.

I eill keep bukh engine for you sure.
Nothing like a good bukh in a crisis :) I look after (not very well :( ) a bukh 10 that just keeps forgiving me for stuffing up, and runs, a little smokily, but so solid, all day. I'm not a fan of engines, but 40 years of service and still starts like a champ after 6 months.

Empathy
doesnt seem to be dealt out equally among us all. Probably a reason why we ended up with this fucked up system called capitalism as a default here in westworld.
When we come out of lockdown there will be a scramble to kick start it up again those with the most to lose/most invested will be the Cheer Squad. The cracks have been showing for a while now, they will just be papered over. Cosmetic appearance is all important in a society with little in the way of durability. NZ being away from the centre is a better place to be than in the middle of it.
We are long due a change, it wont come easily thoJust some random thoughts

Neil,
I think the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition are playing their respective parts quite well.
The government has wanted to introduce quite draconian limits on individual freedom. What better support than the party of individual freedoms demanding it be done quicker.
-
Trevor Nicholls, in reply to
It's asymmetrical support though; the people demanding that we can't trust returning kiwis at the airport are the same cohort trying to drive to their holiday homes in the Coromandel for the weekend.

“I’m forever blowing bubbles”

Neil, in reply to
Only a few percent of the population think the government has gone too far.
I think it’s possible to consider the demands for more action quicker are reasonable and to understand the government can’t act instantaneously.
Part of the delay process to some decisions has been to allow time to get public opinion onside.

Thanks Sacha

This thread feels like it's regaining some kindness. And that has to be a good thing. Stay sensible everyone.

I was concerned to hear talk of an alternate approach being put forward by a group of academics.
Doing a little search Dr Thornley is an epidemiologist in fat people and sugar.
I feel this should have been made clear when interviewing on RNZ this morning, not quite apples to apples.
-
Neil, in reply to
I was interested in what he had to say, not in complete agreement, but a viewpoint worth hearing.
I’d be keen to see if there’s a broad difference of opinion among epidemiologists based on if they came through via a maths or medicine background.
-
Wassup Stuff? Surely Thornley was discredited the last time he opened his mouth?
One of the other “health experts” (Stuff’s term) include one with expertise in “experimental economics.” While genuine “health experts” are focussed on saving lives, economists justify hypothetical arguments for acceptable death rates.
This is not a time for experimental anything. It is not one of those situations where “on the other hand…” is not an option. As far as I can see, our government is listening to exactly the right experts, we've picked what appears to be the right path, and thank fuck for that.

He was being given oxygen on Morning Report t0day – I damn near defenestrated the radio!
He seems to think 540-odd recovered people gives NZ communities herd immunity.
He should stick to ‘faddy lipids’… -
Alfie, in reply to
"Defenestrated." Now there's a word you don't hear very often. ;-)

‘Tumbrels’ may make a comeback too…
…I wonder if Trump ever takes a bath?
Leader of the revolutionary swamp-draining sans-a-belt movement that he is… -
Shep Cheyenne, in reply to
I fear this is a group of wing nut Drs, more fearful in the drop of student numbers and therefore their jobs than the health of the community.
Especially that they had no models to back up their position.
