I'm awake.
Smelling the bacon? Heh. I'm an optimist. Mind you, I've relocated to the "bunker".
-
Bart, do all those precautions against contracting a viral infection actually work? If the virus is endemic, isn't one going to catch it anyway, eventually (like in that 70's movie).
-
Ian, that's a dangerous amount of awesome for one post.
Seconded! That is very special.

Rich
Sadly it's stats. All you do by washing your hands is reduce the probability by an enormous amount - but you can't get to zero.
So if enough surfaces are contaminated then you probably can't avoid it.
Same for staying away from sick people.
BUT in practical terms yes washing your hands will work.
BTW endemic isn't the right word

3410,
Well, either someone at Nightline knows something the rest of the world doesn't, or...someone at Nightline was half-asleep when they put that graphic together. Any bets on which?
I suspect that former, since the 3News graphics crew has until now never screwed up an image ;)
Nice screencap, Mark. I wish someone had got last Wednesday's Close Up , which included a shot of Paul Henry standing in front of a screen displaying a user comment which read, in total, "Paul Henry is a dickhead."

Pandemic. Must get in some more practice.
-
But surely they could spell Auckland correctly, and find out where the Waikato is !
Well, NZ's media are unable to identify the continent in which Mexico is located, and that should be a lot easier to find on a world map.
-
I doubt 'unable' to find it. Too friggin lazy, maybe.
Or was it the 'Central America' designation? Which is not too far off the mark, esp as they consider USAians to be 'norteamericanos'.
-
'They' being the Mexicans, that is.
-
Or was it the 'Central America' designation?
It's the price we pay for reducing things to only North and South Islands. :)
-
Bring back the Middle Island, I say.
-
And 'they' have north, south and central America.
and swine flu, natch. -
via @svs comes the Pandemic Monitoring System (might want to rethink that acronym...)
-
And Israel is demanding that the name be changed to "Mexican Influenza" because "Swine flu" is offensive to Jews and Muslims.
The article makes the point that it was first diagnosed in the US, but I can't see Israel being so keen on "Yankee flu", somehow. -
I was just talking to Wendy Wright, the president of the conservative group Concerned Women for America, about the nomination of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kans.) to run the Department of Health and Human Services. The group opposes the nomination, and Wright is raising some questions about the timing of the swine flu crackdown so close to tomorrow’s cloture vote.
“Some people think that declaring a state of emergency about the flu was a political thing to push the Sebelius nomination through,” said Wright. She pointed to news stories that ask whether the slow-walking of the Sebelius choice will hurt the response to the flu. “If there’s even a hint that [Department of Homeland Security] is manipulating the health situation to push a political appointee through, well, it almost defies imagination that they’d be willing to that.”
It's all a plot by the abortionists!

And Israel is demanding that the name be changed to "Mexican Influenza" because "Swine flu" is offensive to Jews and Muslims.
And wouldn't Mexican influenza be offensive to, you know, Mexicans?
-
Come now, Matthew. It's not "Israel is demanding". We're talking about this dude, who is a fundy whackaloon from a minor party which got him a deputy ministerial position to keep them on side. It is as if Rodney Hide made an off-the-cuff remark at a news conference and you said "New Zealand is demanding".
-
“If there’s even a hint that... well, it almost defies imagination that they’d be willing to that.”
Brilliant.
So IF there WAS a hint of something then it would be bad. What a scoop. -
I suspect that former, since the 3News graphics crew has until now never screwed up an image ;)
The lack of skill of whoever does their photoshopping does tend to boggle the mind, it is true.
-
Won't somebody think of the swine?

-
3410,
Heh. That's the one. Note: NOT photoshopped.
-
Priceless
-
And wouldn't Mexican influenza be offensive to, you know, Mexicans?
I'd have thought that, based upon the logic of Israel's Rodney Hide, it would be offensive to those who have a religious abolition against eating Mexicans.
-
Well, we could just call it H1N1 thus avoiding naming issues.
