  • JacksonP,

The word 'humblebrag' was apparently coined in 2011.

Seems like I've been doing it for much longer. ;-)

I point to Greenfieldism and I point to word of the year. That is all.

  • Sacha,

Not a nomination, but all interested in local wordplay may enjoy Danyl's brilliant channelling of Shelley Bridgeman's literary genius.

    Economy-related words: double-dip

According to one news-digest I get every morning, the UK is now staring down the barrel of a triple-dip recession.

So, I'll get my nomination in for WotY 2012 now: triple-dip.

so Ghost-Jobs as Paul mentioned, but with a capital J. Double whammy.

Someone else will have to do the obligatory "You know I can't grab your ghost jobs, Ghost Jobs!" photoshop. I'm supposed to be working.

  • Paul Webber,

I propose "fuckeulogy." Not a PA ecosystem word, I know, but definitely the best neologism I’ve heard this year.

A fuckeulogy is an oration or writing for a recently deceased person who, in the opinion of the author, has no redeeming qualities and who not be missed in any capacity. The term was coined by John Oliver in a Bugle podcast on the death of Osama bin Laden, when he said, "This is not a tribute episode to bin Laden, as much as a special fuckeulogy to the big guy."

To the best my knowledge only two fuckeulogies have been delivered: one each on the deaths of bin Laden, and Moammar Gadhafi. Both in 2011. My word of the year.

  • Grant McDougall,

As in New Zealand eight, France seven.

For the All Blacks' winning the RWC has been a highlight for many NZers, bringing to an end years of misery and choking and being a much-needed ray of sunshine in an otherwise - no pun intended - trying year.

  • casahuia,

Flash-mob and Pop-up have to be the most in vogue and over used concepts....

There seems to be a pop-up flash-mob haka plank teapot on every red-stickered quake affected corner of this fine land! Makes me want to take a leaf out of Mr Plastic Fantastic's book (JK not the Tuppawaka) and "Smile and Lie".
