When the NZFC-backed short film you directed is picked for a foreign festival some years after its completion,
Was that 'The Nightwatchman', directed by Joe Wylie? (Google is my friend etc).
Picked for a festival in Japan? Excellent! Are you still doing animation? -
That's very nice of you Kerry. Not much animation lately. Ian Dalziel got me a gig painting skateboards which keeps me surprisingly busy, though people tend to hang them on their walls rather than skate on them.
-
I've been skillfully ignoring Joe's much earlier comment in a thread waaay downline, that he'd been a USA-based animator...because I LOVE animated films above all other kind of films (except, possibly, documentaries based on natural history - OK, they're even(.
Now, we'll trundle off to "Real Groovy" and other sites, and attempt to buy this-
-
So Islander, whaddya reckon , Joe for the new list over at the stroke thread:) I can see the skateboard now.....

Thanks Islander, but if I've given the impression that I've ever been USA-based it's been ambiguity on my part. While I've worked with more Americans than I can count, it's all been in Oz, NZ & SE Asia.
BTW, Hayao Miyazaki is better than god.
-
Apologies Joe - it might've been the 'worked with' bit...
"Porco Rosso"! "Princess Mononoke"!! "Nausica"! As well as the other god-deliveries...anyone who hasnt yet seen "Spirited Away" doesnt know the meaning baths & dragons-
he is just SO good-
I have every one of his animations I can obtain- may there be more...
I second steven c - Real Groovy was pretty useless...

Meanwhile over quarter of a century ago...
...in a small (but perfectly formed) laboratory, Professor Wylie places another of those new fangled colour photocopies on the slab and pulls the lever... watch and enjoy The Bride of Frankenstein unearthed by the NZ Film Archives (watch our for the dust) - with its uncannily prescient Knox en L'hopital bed shots : ) (Thinking of you Chris - onwards and upwards!)
If the villagers don't storm his donjon, this Doktor Wylie will go far...

Sofie - a skateboard by Joe W?
WAUA!
Incandescent hope! It would be so good - reach me, use me, I am your future friend-
You bet , mate!
Islander, who really appreciates Igors, and wishes there could be some crossover between the Disc and here (aside from 4X of course.)
-
So if you're not too keen on PJ and the Aussie, Geoff, who would you have liked to see in those roles?
Someone not so involved in the film business (and a possible recipient of NZFC funding) but with a good grasp of the issues-- Roger Horrocks, for example.
Yes, I got out to gardening as well, and found a rare brom had a pup which was really cool
That's good. They can be tricky. I wouldn't mind having the recipe for the tamarillo chutney--my tree still has fruit, even though it has been hit hard by the frost (it always comes back). If it continues fine tomorrow, I will put in another round of garlic.
That rugby test was damn close tonight!!

can we get to see The Nightwachman?
Thanks for your interest Steven. There was a crummy copy on YouTube until recently from when it screened on MTV, but it's since been removed for copyright reasons beyond my control. Equal credit for that fraught little film should go to the hugely talented John Robertson, animator & designer extraordinaire.
In the meantime, as a more contemporary substitute, I've sent you a picture of a skateboard.
-
Oh, can I see one too please Joe? Just been watching Bride of Frankenstein. Fond memories of Toy Love , and Still a great tune all these years later. Y'know we are gathering an idea of donations to the rehab plus where Chris will probably go. :) hinting.....
-
Thanx Sofie :)
-
Beautiful.
Thanx Joe. MORE! WE WANT MORE! :) -
That's a great idea Sofie. And I'm not ignoring your email. It's just that I find myself in hospital recovering from the emergency removal of a bloody big kidney stone. Ironically, I think I'm directly underneath Chris.
Should be home today, but Praise the Lord for iv morphine. I needed that on Friday night!
-
Eeeeek!!
emergency removal of a bloody big kidney stone.
Extremely painful, i believe - hope you're feelin' better today, Russell. Can they iv whisky?? That should flush you out.

Ian Dalziel got me a gig painting skateboards
Had an idea overnight for you and Ian - 5-10 second animated political cartoons for online publications?? I dunno how hard, expensive, time-consuming this would be but I kinda had this vision of a pithy, old-school political/social cartoon, hand-drawn like Tom Scott or someone, but animated?? Out of the question?
You two are so clever...
-
Ohhh Russell. Get Well soon . How does it feel now the kidney stone is gone ? You'll be a box of birds before you know it but I suggest get the drugs man, just as a back up eh?
-
You two are so clever...
You're very kind Kerry. One thing that 30+ years involved in sort-of film production has taught me - it's the writers who are the really clever ones.
-
Russell, you must have been in pain for some time.
Please take care to have a gentle and indulgent convalescence. -
Russell ,Feel free to ignore email until Tues at least. I will go up there and get back to you. I am going to say the inspiration is Public Address System though and if you would rather I didn't I can not but need to know. :)

Back home now, exhausted, relieved it's over.
Hilary, yes: my GP finally diagnosed my recurring lower back pain as kidney stones a week before, but told me they'd dissolve if I just drank plenty of Ural. Turns out, that was quite poor advice.
Anyway, I'm going to sit down and watch some documentaries from the internet while I have things brought to me.

Back home now, exhausted, relieved it's over.
Here's to a speedy recovery, Russell. Enjoy being waited on hand and foot whilst it lasts - I would suggest that, in return, Fiona gets a day or five in lieu......
-
The Great Stone Belt... or a renal smack?
Isn't modern medicine wonderful...? and the marketing... !
I mean a kidney stone dissolver called Ural named after a Russian Mountain range (itself meaning belt of stones and one of the oldest ranges on the planet)I'm guessing the connection is in the entropic grinding action, as great mountains become boulders, small stones, grit then dust - all things must pass - carried by gravity fed liquids to
a loo vile pain - much like Canterbury really... : )Did your GP not have any suggestions for sonic solutions to your crystallising calculus problem? I'm surprised the Gordons / Bailterspace don't have a song called Shock Wave Lithotripsy or HDU's Metamathics maybe.
But seriously, Russell commiserations on your unexpected IV League induction and all the best for a rapid recovery...
Here's the relevant Seinfield episode to enjoy...

Good to hear all's well Russell. My father had a gallstone operation this time 2 years ago, so it's something I can relate to.
