  • Joe Wylie,

Yes, but why would we want to do that, when we can get some dipstick like yourself, to do it for us, for peanuts?

When I said that, you do all realize who I'm satirizing, I hope.

If you commies would just spend half as much time thinking about flow restrictors and pole fuses as you do about taking the piss.

OMFG! It al makes sense now... Emma Hart + Jolisa Gracewood = Summer Glau x (Linda Hamilton/Lena Hedley) / Helen Bonham-Carter to the power of Kristanna Loken+Claire Danes.

    WE'RE ALL DOOOOOOMED!!!!

  • Craig Ranapia,

Meanwhile, one for the With Enemies LIke This Who Needs Friends file. The ever reliable Chris Trotter goes all the way into the gutter, by condemning critics of Phil Goof as...

the fervent champions of an indigenous culture they can never truly join because, fundamentally, they despise their own. [Emphasis added]

I'm sorely tempted to Godwin myself, and point out the kind of company Trotter keeps when he slags off political opponents as self-hating race traitors... But I really think (as Danyl has pointed out) it speaks volumes that Goff's senior policy advisor is in the comments praising "the most astute reading of the state of left politics that I’ve seen recently."

I can only hope "real" New Zealanders repay with interest the cynical contempt Goff and his apologists with the same cynical contempt have shown them.

  • Tony Parker,

I can only hope "real" New Zealanders repay with interest the cynical contempt Goff and his apologists with the same cynical contempt have shown them.

Yeah well I'm finding it increasingly hard not to feel cynical about the Maori Party and the way they've sold us down the river with the ETS. Not to mention the complete silence when the dumbest education minister we've ever had closes a Decile 1 bilingual school that has a high maori roll. Where are the cries of racism and disadvantage from the MP that would have greeted a decision like this in the past.

    Tony Parker:

I know I'm supposed to be OK with Goff's race-baiting, because he's only targeting the bad uppity darkies. But... fuck it. No.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Surely Tony's opinion is just as valid as yours Craig? I don't get an impression of him telling you you were wrong. Then I could be wrong so ...

  • Tony Parker,

    Craig:
I guess we differ on our opinion of Phil Goff's statements and I'm not saying you're wrong. It's just I didn't see it as race baiting, well maybe a little bit, and it may not have been the best thing he could have done, but what I thought he was trying to do was call bullshit on some of what the Maori Party are doing. And it should be able to be done without the race card being played. Either by Goff or his critics.

  • Sacha,

what I thought he was trying to do was call bullshit on some of what the Maori Party are doing.

Then why not just do that? - more than enough ammo.

And it should be able to be done without the race card being played.

Agreed. Goff's message would have been stronger without the distracting whistling noise. He was delivering a prepared speech, with its title and contents deliberately chosen. How hard could it have been to avoid inflammatory phrases? It's a tired, desperate ploy at best.

The subsequent discussion sure is interesting though, with good points scattered widely. Lew at Kiwipolitico delves into the meta-language on his way to this conclusion:

The message from Goff’s Labour party is loud and clear: we make no apologies for the decisions taken while being chased by the Brash Iwi/Kiwi monster, and are now prepared to do it all again if need be. This is a damned shame for the country, and for the party.

Labour had a great opportunity to mend its bridges with Māori, as the māori party is burdened with an appalling ETS and its more and more fraught partnership with National — and instead of doing so they set another charge and detonated it.

The Māori electorate will not support a Labour party which has declared itself the party of blue-collar Pākehā rednecks who are sick of ‘those Māoris’ and their complaining about things which happened the century before last.

  • Sacha,

Oh, and I liked this opinion from Danyl:

I think they’re testing the water; I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a coded attack on feminism: a speech to (say) a church group or sports club on how New Zealand boys are ‘being left behind’ would do nicely.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Surely Tony's opinion is just as valid as yours Craig?

Sure, and on reflection I'm not entirely fair to Tony personally -- but I've heard too many folks over the last couple of days who really don't have a problem with race-bating when they don't like the targets. Well, they're entitled to their opinion, and I'm entitled to hold it in complete contempt.

You can criticise the Maori Party without channelling Winston Peters; just as it was entirely possible to criticise the last Labour Government without reaching for the misogynistic arse-hat. But I guess some folks in Labour still have A LOT of work to do on their frustrated sense of entitlement around the Maori vote.

  • andrew clive,

Looks like you're all drinking from the same poisoned trough.trying to convince each other that you represent mainstream public opinion when in fact the views expressed here are for the most part minority left wing . You should all do yourself some big favor , stop inbreeding & go & talk to those real folks at the coal face. What a bunch of dictators.

  • Islander,

andrew clive, I built my own house. I come from a Labour party family.
We are all workers, doctors and academics and poets included. I wouldnt say we represent 'mainstream public opinion' - what the fuck is that?-but we are *not*'minority left wing' -whatever the fuck that is.
PAS is one of the very few blogs we have encountered where we can have intelligent and informed discussions - preferably sans the wee trolly types like yourself.

  • Sacha,

trying to convince each other that you represent mainstream public opinion

Haven't seen anyone around here claim that except you, old man.

  • andrew clive,

Islander most of the views on this blog i have encountered are left wing & out of touch with majority mainstream public opinion.

    examples:

Anti smacking lobby [alive & well here]
Maori Party ETS removal [support alive & well here]
Anti Sensible Sentencing Trust [alive & well here]
Anti March for Democracy [alive & well here]

Take a look at majority public opinion on each of the above & it goes against the views presented here. There are no variants here at PAS in regard to any of those subjects above. If there are where are you? Yet PAS bloggers try & convince themselves that there views represent majority widespread public opinion. They don't! Anyone who doesn't agree with PAS status quo on any of the above is ridiculed & condemned with sarcasm.Widespread public opinion is condemned here. PAS doesn't care as its anti democratic.

  • giovanni tiso,

PAS doesn't care as its anti democratic.

So, in order to be democratic you *must* have the same opinion as the majority. And

    What a bunch of dictators.

    You're simply adorable!

  • Islander,

    'majority public opinion' andrew clive?
    As determined by whom?
Talkback radio? Surveys commissioned by interested parties? You used the 87% figure before - that is *87% of registered voters *who bothered to vote.* About 50% of the rvp-

Giovanni (book& cheese in the mail apopo) is really nice: I just find you excrecable.

  • andrew clive,

A range of views on the above topics doesn't exist here. What does exist is a conceited "I am right , you are wrong" arrogant condescension. Peculiar for any blog. Anyone holding views in line with majority public opinion with regard to the subjects above is immediately savaged .Scary dictatorship exists .

There were numerous other public polls conducted prior to the anti smacking referendum poll that showed consistently 80% of New Zealanders didn't want Bradford's anti smacking legislation.

    Go back to sleep.

Sure, whatever. And that position happens to be in the minority on this forum. So your point is...?
