  • DPF,

Actually it was National under Jim Bolger that ditched that MBEs and replaced them with MNZMs etc.

All Labour did was change the top two classes of the NZ Order of Merit from titular to non titular - which was reversed this year.

  • Idiot Savant,

So, how much do you think Myers paid for his knighthood?

  • Craig Ranapia,

Here's to them, and I'm not really bothered what we let them call themselves.

Good to see I'm not the only one. Seriously, there's always a few "wtf?' names on the list and inexplicable omissions. But that's pretty much the same reaction I expect to have when the Oscar nominations are announced next month. It's not as if we're seeing this kind of cash for honours corruption.

Still, I will enjoy watching the usual suspects have a brain melt over "Dame" Helen Clark,. :)

How much do you think Peter Jackson paid for his? I imagine a stake in Weta Workshops/Digital and Wingnut Films (they must be pulling in some tasty District 9 cash) would be the graft that keeps on giving.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Sir Peter Jackson? hmmm! There goes the image of 'I'm just an average Kiwi bloke from Pukerua Bay'. Let's hope he now doesn't build himself a castle.

...and I think Russell better deserves a gong for "service to broadcasting" than Judy Bailey.

TOO LATE! BWAHAHAHAHA! (Sidebar: You've got to love the fusion of house porn and the property envy. The papers would be a lot thinner if we all lived in caves.)

Shut up, or Russell's going to start poncing around chanting "Who's the daddy of the nation? I'm your daddy!" :)

  • Pdogge,

I'm not being uncharitable but this guy Myers is just one of the greedy bunch of Ak biz men who bought the present government and historically happened to be just another very selfish drug dealer albeit a legal drug that he made and sold. Little to admire ........

  • Evan Yates,

If there are really obvious omissions, you can do something about it.

Fill in one of these forms and then convince (in whatever form and means you find capable) these people that it is a good idea.

It is probably not socially acceptable to game the system in a grassroots/astroturfing 'Net campaign style, but with enough support from eloquent and driven PAS readers we could probably have Sir Russell Brown in time for Queen's Birthday. (although all nominees have the right to refuse)

Does he rent it to larpers? I can think of a couple of uses for a castle...

  • 3410,

To add insult to injury, it's Sir Doug, for services to business and the community.

  • AndrewD,

Arise Duncan Page. Takaka. For services to brass bands. I like that.

  • Geoff Lealand,

And the QSM for the Hamilton couple Heather May and James Tuhoro who have fostered 380 children and teens over 16 years (probably a few who have been victims of Doug Myers drug of choice)

I think we need a special PA word for when Craig makes coffee come out your nose... roflsnorti perhaps?

  • Graeme Edgeler,

Actually it was National under Jim Bolger that ditched that MBEs and replaced them with MNZMs etc.

It was a Labour Government that instituted the Order of New Zealand, however.

  • Russell Brown,

Thats the same Doug that said he didn't like how the public gets to borrow books from the community libraries.

To be honest, my unkind feelings towards Mr Myers stem somewhat from an opinion piece he once wrote for the Herald, in which he declared that libraries were not a public good, and that it was of no benefit to him that some poor bastard read a book.

I declared him an "arsehole" on the radio, which led to him mistakenly bailing up Bill Ralston one evening. But I've told that story before ...

  • Hilary Stace,

Any disability activists or awards for services to the disability sector on the list?

Did he really say that? Guess we should wait for Witi's forthcoming Knighthood then. The Plagiarists and Pugilists New Zealand Disorder of Demerit.

Some of the others I didn't mind so much.

PS 100th post. Are there prizes? Guess with all the 1000+ people on this thread, probably not.

Ah... no. I didn't even get anything for my 1000th. If I get nothing for my 10,000th I'm outta here.

I reckon we need something like scout badges;)

Russell as Scout Master. Can I get a tie with a toggle? Sorry, I see a thread Jack on the horizon.

    Back to the honours list...

Having benefited in a very tangible sense from the work they have done, Dr Richard Fisher and his colleague are extremely worthy recipients, IMhO. We had healthy, beautiful twins, so he can get all the awards he likes, thank you very much.

  • Sacha,

I'd rather focus on the hundreds of our fellow citizens on that list who have done good things. However, including pricks like Myers leaves a sour taste.

My own unkind feelings towards him stem from his sub-human conduct and born-to-rule braying over the years. Fair enough, honour his contribution to business leadership through the Roundtable and suchlike. However, I'd love to know just what 'services to community' he has provided - especially given the "there is no society" dolts he hangs with who actively oppose things like public libraries as mentioned.

And it's a bit rich for him to declaim from his London home:

We've just got to create an environment here where people want to stay here and live here and be part of New Zealand - and yet still be part of the world.

Slashing tax rates for silver-spooners ought to do it, right?

He got the equivalent in 2004 and was one of the few to turn down Key's knighting last year - not surprising considering the backdrop of The Trowenna Sea is our shameful colonialist history.

Now you mention it, I do remember that. Bit slack on doing my homework. Interesting to compare what was thought/said at that time with what has resulted from the TS debacle. But this debate has been exhaustively covered, so my apologies for dragging it up.
