Yes, one wonders if there is enough of a market for actual competition within cities. I mean if Auckland doesn't have it...
I was reading some vintage Bruce Jesson yesterday. After observing that "New Zealand's business and bureaucratic culture is saturated with the amorals attitudes of the New Right", he wrote:
The is not a single leftish/liberal newspaper in any major city. The Listener is the only such magazine.
Bless. One is almost glad he's not around to see what The Listener has become.

the owner of the New Zealand Herald
Anybody interested in putting together a consortium to buy Granny and operate it under a trust structure? I hate to admit I'm taken to reading the DomPost now because the Herald has become soooo awful.
I presume this is due to panic over falling revenue manifesting as hysteria in the reporting..?
if we could find a way to get some of that commercial pressure off....

"amoral attitudes", above. I don't want to give the impression that Jesson was illiterate - it's on me, and the edit window is closed.
-
And one more for good luck.
I only recently discovered this but the track is good fun -
Okay -- better pick winners now so people know where they're at.
octopusgrrl -- how's about I award you the CD? Can you click the little envelope next to my name over there and get me an address?
flash - you've got the Auckland double pass. Can you get back to me asap with an actual name?
John Curtis - you've got the Wellington pass. Also get back me as soon as you can.
All done. Arbitrary? Me?

Awesome. Reggae. Something I think I can actually comment on.

On a different note. My entry for the big dumb dance tune of the week has to be Nero's remix of Holiday by Dizzee Rascal. Make your weekend a better place here:

Oh, and I plumb forgot to tell the funniest story from the Massive Attack show last night.
We're standing out in the upstairs foyer chatting to some friends.
The apparently omnipresent house PA system suddenly burst into life with an alert tone from the ceiling above our heads:
"THERE WILL BE A PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION."
And that was all. It was like some surreal art thing.
We laughed, puzzled.

Never, ever. My heart swelled the other day when I asked my 4 year old in the car what he wanted, tentatively suggesting "The wheels on the bus". The answer, firmly, was "NO. Bob Marley's Buffalo Soldier".
-
@Kate
My friend Clive used to like "The Israelites" when he was a kid, but he misheard the words; he'd sing "OOOOOOoooooh my ears are alight".
It definitely has something.
-
we heard the same announcement last night - very odd. Fun night
-
Apologies if this doesn't work. Firewall means I'm flying blind.

Nice. My kids, now teenagers are fond of comments like "This is another song about smoking drugs eh dad!"
Ahem.

She is prepared to make bold statements on the basis of bugger-all, isn't she? One would think that she has something against the Herald on Sunday.
But declaring that the Herald's Super City coverage comes from the "Fear and Smear School of Journalism, generating more hysteria than light on the subject of Auckland governance," is, er ... odd. Why ever would she be saying that?

As was the accompanying tweet

More axes to grind than the axel grinders?

Hi Russell, awesome, thanks.
I've sent you an email with my details.
(can't figure out how to quote other people's posts) -
I like tying things together. Hmm, I mean musically.

Live from Channel One, in the 1970s, The mighty Mighty Diamonds:
and two from Johnny Clarke from the same decade @ King Jammy's & Bunny Lee's

I always wondered if Blam Blam Blam got their name from this one...
-
Three from a London band from back in my day.
Not as old school, and a bit more dub, than a few on here.
And just because we haven't had enough references to Babylon yet.
And finally, if you ever wondered what a dub version of The Ruts would sound like (a bit more tweety and annoying than I remember from last time I listened to it, but still....)
-
Syewart - the only thing I got from that vid is- that is one very small chimp who is afraid (look at the eye-direction - someone to the left of it is what it wants to please/obey)
-but yeh, blamblamblam - comes through=
-
Sometimes the combination of an infectious rhythm and a good lyric would come together. Does that sound harsh? Funny tho I don't like the stoner ones much hmm weird. Maybe I need to be there.
A favourite classic reggae songAnd umm one from a bit later with some really cool dudes
I have to use the one without the music clip sorry
