Those nostalgic Box and Celebre pix are great, Simon, ta.
Mostly taken by my wife when she was doing the social shots for Monitor and BiFim. There are hundreds more but they're tucked away in a box or two somewhere in her parents attic we think. It's gonna be a fun gathering, almost like a family reunion.
Innocent days

It will probably be the last big-arsed motorway, anywhere in the world, to be shoehorned through suburbs where there has been no route protection.
Only if you consider Asia ain't part of the world. Plenty of motorway projects are likely to trample through poorer 'burbs in this part of the world in the years to come.

News item last night showed the little kid actor in Slum Dog Millionaire has just had their home bulldozed to make way for a park.( amongst the famous slums of India, yeah right)

And the thought of driving to Levin via Featherston, Pahiatua, Palmerston North and Shannon is truly something out of a doomsday horror movie.
OTOH, I bet I'm not the only person who has ever insisted that a trip from Wellington to the Mt Bruce wildlife reserve go via Palmerston North because she hates the Rimutaka hill road Just That Much.

I'm voting Evo Morales for Transport Minister...

As far as I know, Transmission Gully still subjects traffic to the same choke point near the caketin where a decent quake will wipe out the only motorway, utilities and communication lines, rail and ferry terminals, etc. So not a solution to that particular problem, but just another example of expensively moving the traffic jam a bit further up the road in peak loads - like the Puhoi motorway, enjoy it though I do.
Better public transport frees up roads for goods delivery, so should have the full support of the business lobby, most of whom do not stand to benefit from massive construction contracts.

It's a lot better now, Amy. Almost all of the hairpins have been carved away, there are 'slow vehicle' lanes in a number of places and you can travel most of it at a reasonable speed

If you happen to go to Strangely Normal you could always pick up one of the last cheapo tickets to this:
Shameless plugSimon, I'd be proud to host a 'Stories' discussion here, under a guest post by you about the Box/Celebre years. Feel free to think of any other way we could help the gig ...

I think you came along after the Bob Seger era. It was not an easy time upstairs in Darby Street. Hal, Mark and Ngila all had words. Dave Perkins, may he rest, wasn't quite so fussed.
Yeah, I missed that too. Although Hal did once storm through to have words after I'd played 'Let the Music Play' by Shannon one too many times.

(Where the Headless Chickens had their practice room. To this day I still think it was a contributing factor to the dark current that took Johnny Pearce away - RIP)
Against all reason, me too.
I sometimes wonder what that part of the modern high rise, that occupies the site now, feels like?
And again ...

Meh, not so much. Ngauranga and the Motorway along the faultline are issues with or without the Gully, but you can still get out of town via Johnsonville. Once you get past Mana and Plimmerton, you're stuffed until Levin. Centennial Highway (SH1 between Pukerua Bay and Paekakariki) is a dual carriageway with a barrier down the middle. Even a simple breakdown along there can cause issues. The road has had to be closed during some heavy storms as waves crash across it and litter debris about the place.
This is a significant issue for Welly as the trucks bringing food and other supplies use this route daily, and the city wouldn't have much reserve if there was a prolonged blockage.
It's not so much about moving the jam, but reducing the load on a single stretch, which will save wear and tear on both roads and give better options for travelers. SH1 will always have jams as long as it runs through towns.

Sounds like a fab idea if you are up for it Russell...and thoroughly and humbly appreciated too

Ha, we used to get that at BFM in the mid eighties when Roger P and I would do our Saturday afternoon dance show.
I had to ban MC from playing Bob Seger in the flat too. I'd threaten him with Orange Juice's L.O.V.E. Love and it would work everytime

This is probably an opportune time to point towards a very good Shannon/Feist mashup.

Oh! I love being reminded of songs hiding in the depths of my brain! To the tubes...

I'll see your Shannon/Feist mashup and raise you a Shannon/Rolling Stones mashup!
