  • Geoff Lealand,

Before we jump into the next conversation, I would appreciate any thoughts or responses to the item I posted at the tail-end of the last thread "After the Deluge" (if that ain't too cheeky, Russell!)

  • philipmatthews,

"Share it with each other" indeed -- that tourism promo makes 70s NZ look like the world capital of wife-swap parties.

But what street in what NZ city is at 0.49? I can't figure it out.

  • giovanni tiso,

But I fear we may not be hearing too much more of Garth.

Something good to come out of global warming, then?

But what street in what NZ city is at 0.49? I can't figure it out.

Looks like Queen St to me. Definitely not in Wellywood.

  • Russell Clarke,

Talking of birds of New Zealand and iPhones all in the same breath, check out WhatBirdNZ on the App Store - very cute, and useful if you happen to be out in the garden/reserve/insert outdoor location here, and wonder which one of our feathered friends that tweeting is coming from.

  • Just thinking,

Give me strength - trying to write and the end of lectures party started 4 hours ago.

Cops have been to my street twice and I have heard a fire engine once.

All has been quiet for the past couple of hours - eye of the storm.

  • Richard Irvine,

I gave Garth a beatdown on my blog for his liberal use of find-a-quote to pad out his cycling rant.

  • Stephen Judd,

I think the most troubling thing about that clip is...

... coming up with the best exploitative t-shirt design.

SPOILER ALERT don't read past this bit, also Russell we need some sort of spoiler alert system...

I'm torn between an iconic pie and "Safer Communities Together", and a stern cop head and shoulders with "Always Blow on the Pie."

  • Brenda Leeuwenberg,

Picking up on the "On the Mat" discussion - please do add your suggestions about who you'd like to see again - over on the Forum at NZ On Screen.

Sadly there isn't very much footage around, but we're working on it!

  • Donald Reid,

At least there could be no accusations of ageism made against NZ Tourism in their promotion. Unless its negative ageism?

Give me strength - trying to write and the end of lectures party started 4 hours ago.

Cops have been to my street twice and I have heard a fire engine once.

All has been quiet for the past couple of hours - eye of the storm.

I trotted off merrily across campus to get some stamps, got in sight of the fences and portaloos and screaming hordes, and turned back post-haste.

  • Steve Curtis,

While on about silly George, heres a takedown about silly Jim

    http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/SC0704/S00001.htm
"So simplistic, it's silly" is how Dr Auer describes the statement by NIWA climate scientist Dr Jim Salinger that "As climate warming occurs, the atmosphere can hold more moisture and therefore more rain falls and therefore what we have thought of under past climate data as one-in-100 or more reduces."

“While qualified climate scientists will cringe at Jim Salinger’s nonsensical interpretation, ordinary New Zealanders affected by adverse natural weather events should rise up and demand that administration of all climate matters should return to its traditional home, MetService,” said Dr Auer.

There has been longstanding clashes between the weather people and the climate people over' the Science'.
Same thing happened over the Atlantic Hurricane season.. and the weather people won , since you dont hear anymore about global warming bringing more hurricanes... since it hasnt.

  • Brent Jackson,

Umm. I have no idea what the opening section of your blog is on about. Perhaps if I had a facebook login I'd be able to work it out. However, for the edification of myself (and other unfacebooked PASers) could someone please explain what the story is.

    Cheers,
    Brent.

You might have had a point if MetService hadn't issued a statement endorsing the mainstream view on climate change and distancing itself from anything Augie Auer said.

  • Steve Reeves,

That clip does make NZ look very...monocultural...was it like that then?

And that end message did seem to say: if you're white, it's all yours...and so if you're not already there, go and claim your piece of it (before.....)

  • Gabor Toth,

That tourism film is pure gold!
I mean even the You Tube identification code speaks volumes -
    ADOCkFuqyQ8 for goodness sake!

Oh yes it is! Freeze at 0.49 and you'll see that it is a shot looking up Willis Street with a long lens (making the Council housing block at the top of Willis Street seem closer than it actually is). You can see the neon sign for the old Majestic Theatre (now the site of the Majestic Centre on the corner of Willis and Boulcott Streets) just to the right of centre of the frame.

  • Brickley Paiste,

when the internet was abruptly deprived of probably the greatest moment of real-life television policing in New Zealand history this week, loud was the wailing and, um, gnarly was the gnashing.

To what do you so obliquely refer?

My work internet does not allow me to open Facebook.

    What is this all about?

  • Shayne Stuchbery,

Funny because the ooky feeling I had while watching that clip hinted at seedy old Christchurch. (shudder) Further evidence is found at :24 the family concert is at none other than the Christchurch town hall.

  • Lucy Stewart,

They are going to start sicking up soon, from what I'm reading.

As long as they're doing it on the other side of campus, I am slightly vindictively pleased by that.

Further evidence is found at :24 the family concert is at none other than the Christchurch town hall.

Can't look at the clip right now, but: if it's an indoors one, the Michael Fowler Centre and Chch town hall are identical, pretty much. I have yet to work out which is the evil twin, though.

Ah yes the capitalist ethic, no communism in journalism etc, how right you are.

And the underlying conditioned cultural response that it's not ok to share ideas, that people must work independently, is why the environmental problem will never be solved.

Do I hear a "but that's the rules"? While flaunting youtube...

  • Steve Parks,

Brickley, watch the you tube clip from Stephen a couple posts above to see what Russell was referring to.

I'm torn between an iconic pie and "Safer Communities Together", and a stern cop head and shoulders with "Always Blow on the Pie."

    The latter gets my vote.

Was asking the same question, No one's prepared to write it down, people just keep pointing to some video clip, elitism against the blind.
