I'm happily running both 10.5.6 and Safari 4 on my iBook G4. I'm finding that Safari 4 is much smoother than 3 and my 18 year old was so impressed that he got me to load it onto the old eMac which is also running Leopard. Both machines plus an excellent broadband connection from orcon are making life on the interweb that much easier.

The thing about Outlook is it is not just an eMail client. It is also a calender/Organiser, with reminders for appointments etc. task lists and a fully fledged contacts database with all the bells and whistles you could imagine IIRC Lotus was similar but Evolution is Open Source.
I reckon it's DA Bomb on Linux and would love to see it stable on Windows but, as I said before, How many people actually really use this kind of software. I mean, if you have to have a computer to organise your life do you really have one?. -
I've stayed well away from outlook at home, but at work I use entourage to (increasingly) organise my work life. I only switched a few weeks ago from using Apple mail, Address Book, and iCal.
Emails, calendar, contacts, to do lists etc.
Curious if anyone else has used entourage and how they've found it.

One of the issues I've lived with over the years is a lack of short term memory. When I was in corporate land, I used PIMs (allied with a PDA) to remind me of meetings and events. Now I work solo, from home, I don't have so much of a need for portable calendaring and contacts, but I find that Thunderbird with extensions is enough for the job. I've repurposed my Palm as a loop composer ;-)

Yeah, I went to it when I moved to a Mac mostly because I needed my 10 odd years of Outllook correspondence at hand when I was working. I don't mind it but it's a curiously neutered version of Outlook which misses a bunch of stuff that I took for granted on Outlook (for example being able to ask for a read-receipt at times, but quite a lot more) and it's search facility sucks. I've used Mail on one of my email accounts but to be honest I still think, bloated and buggy as it is, Outlook kills both just in basic functionality and ease of use.
The other issue I have is that Entourage spits the dummy with certain wi-fi setups, especially in hotels and airports, and won't send unless you fiddle around with ports.
I have Thunderbird on an account on my daughter's PC and I agree with Mark, it kicks both of them out of the playground.

Not wishing to threadjack, but it is Friday, so...
Has anybody here played with cyanotypes? I'd like to give it a go, having read up on it, but I'm having difficulty finding an NZ supplier of the chemicals so thought I'd ask here if anyone knows where I could source them from? ("them" being Ammonium iron(III) citrate and Potassium ferricyanide)

Mark, I have a friend at Massey in Wellington who does cyanotypes. I'll ask her.
Cyanotype prints are quite exquisite.

Re Thunderbird - I'd really like to switch from entourage but cannot see a way to export from entourage to thunderbird. Am I missing something? Cheers. Am loving Safari 4 - but am slightly bitter I can't use ad block as I'm 10.4.11 . . .

Doesn't Gmail have pretty much all these functions now? Not sure about the contacts functions but I wouldn't be surprised if they were there, and I use Gmail & Google Calendar to manage all my task lists and appointments. I did use Thunderbird, but it's I've dialed it back to an email reader/storage system now.

I use Gmail mainly for subscriptions to websites and stuff I can get along without. The problem with it is - well, Google. I just don't trust anybody who gives you so much for free, I guess. And I don't want to rely on it. Same with GoogleDocs. What happens if they turn it off, or start to charge?My email is sort of private to me, and I don't want Google training their AI by running it over my inbox. Plus, if I lose net access for a period, I still have access to all my older mail.

The only good bit in today's Herald was when Business Editor Liam Dann absolutely pans John Key's “Jobs Summit” – it’s the only piece of critical journalism I've read about the “do-fest” and I suspect he might be fired soon for breaking the fawning-sycophantic-dribble editorial line...
