Perhaps he would consider ‘smoking’ to be false spelling
I've no idea - it wasn't intended as a personal attack, part of a wider trend.

‘smocking’
A cunning appeal to the midwestern conservative base. Home on the prairie and all that.

Gaslight.
Burn baby, burn.

Ooh, that suggests another simple contender summing up several threads over the year:
burn
denoting, e.g.:
(i) gaslighting as standard political discourse
(ii) the acrid smoke indicating a leadership crisis in National (emanating from burning Bridges)
(iii) growing consensus that global warming must stop now (“nuclear moment”)
(iv) wildfires as evidence supporting (iii)
(v) growing public apathy in the USA and the UK (rejecting all compromise, to "let it all burn" -- e.g. Mr Tangerine Man announcing he's "proud to shut down the government", while the British government galumphs towards a "no-deal Brexit") -

EE,
Throwing shade

I'd also like to nominate "embarrassing".
Initially because of this, then this, lots of this type of thing including this just lately, this from Zuckerberg, this from Brexit, this from an MP, this from a grown man...

Yes, kind or kindness. It has even been mentioned a lot in Parliamentary question time this year. Let's have an aspirational WOTY.

Hana Koko, our Māori Santa.
A non gender specific Māori Santa would be even better, but hey, baby steps. -
Woke

Probably hung over from last year but the "witch hunt" or "WITCH HUNT!!!" is still on.

TERF
2018 has been the year that my poor little ”right on!” brain has become so confused. I feel like I don’t have a clue what’s going on any more and this word sums up my “Wha’...??”1080
More confusion. My mates are DoC workers doing their best to improve our environment and they’ve copped so much abuse, you’d think they were worse vandals than every oil, mineral and pharma business combined. Because they use 1080. -
Oh yeah, and
Woke

I don’t have a clue what’s going on
If interested here are a couple of backgrounders. 2018 has been wild(!!) on that account locally – a year when the types of ‘allies’ who’d previously shown performative support while largely neglecting to advocate for trans people’s material needs graduated to performatively debating issues mooted by anti-trans activists while neglecting trans people’s needs.
nominating:
performative
and
ally/allies

Could have sworn I did this before
#metoo (to show we're not just windowdressing/worddressing here) -

There are a few nominations for #metoo back on page 1;
but of course repeating it’s especially appropriate!
(and … yes, you’ve also nominated it without the hashtag, near the top of page 3.) -
Our #metoo last year came in at no.2, beaten out of contention by Jacindamania.

Righto folks, thanks very much that's the conclusion of the discussion stage. Voting starts tomorrow!
