Thanks, Russell, for putting this online, and for curating such a wonderful group of co-bloggers. Of course I relate to Emma's, erm, provocations with much enjoyment, I loved Tze Ming's wit, found Dr Tibby's contributions were incredibly intelligent and thought-provoking, love geeking along with Keith, enjoy Jolisa's occasional postcards, and Hayden has even managed to make me read about sport once or twice and enjoy it.
Also, this too was my major link to my turangawaewae for a number of years (and will be again from next year). I keep meaning to get along to one of the semi-regular events, but the mild dash of social anxiety that rears its head has kept me away. I think I'm going to have to buckle up sometime - something involving whisky would definitely help. :-)
And so too with many of the commenters here - you make it a lively and thoughtful place. Cheers and kudos to all.

Thank you, Russell, for remembering Finn. And for your work highlighting the injustice Arie Smith-Voorkamp suffered. In fact for the frequent focus on the autistic spectrum one way or another. So useful that I quoted PublicAddress in my thesis on autism policy. And of course for humans too which has tailed off in recent months waiting for new inspiration. The Aspie community is beginning to take charge of their own interests quite effectively these days, although we parents will continue to have ‘issues’.

I'm here so often I thought I was really in the thick of it but I see I've only notched a measly 200 odd posts. Still, I'm happy to be mostly a lurker and appreciate all those words from everyone else.
It's a good model Russell, quite unique, which makes me wonder if anyone else could have done it.

So just barging in with no respect to the regulars.
But (gulp) fuck it, RB. Planet, bFM, this ... thing, the live events ... the music! You've done us proud. And that's the understatement of the year.
You helped me through the W. Bush years. You introduced me to John Daily Stewart. You ... unwittingly, no doubt ... were part of my inspiration to join the Green Party.
Here's a no-longer secret: I think of PA most times I play the ukulele. Read it 'n'weep, folks.
Shit, I dunno. It's just brilliant. I _always_ have a good time here.

Oh, and my "future of TV", "couch testing", JC Matthew 380 Freeview recorder!!! It changed my life. I said in these pages "I might never watch live TV again." Well, I was pretty close. If you record Coro, you get more than you can deal with: I'm down to two ep's a year now, and that's more than enough. Plus sometimes the kids like to watch musical reality game shows. Fucked if I'm going to clog up the hard drive with that.
Durn thing conked out 3 weeks ago. I lasted 2 days before running out to the nearest big box retailer to replace it. Bigger memory, yucky interface, same suh-weet ad-free time-shifting.

I've appreciated having PA/S available since I left NZ in 07 and indeed before I left. I vaguely recall someone, maybe Che, helping me find waffles in Wellington, which was most kind.

How many words does 3 Kingdoms have? And translation or original?
The source I saw said 800,000, in translation. Is it even a meaningful thing to count, in original? Presumably such counts are very hard to make, since the number of characters per idea is not fixed, and ideas are not the same as words.

A character count would be easy, obviously. A word count, less so, and would involve a bit of discussion, but certainly neither meaningless nor impossible. It's not so much a characters:ideas issue as a 'discrete units of meaning' issue, and that's not entirely sorted out in English either - see all those hyphens and compounds, for example.
But 800,000 in translation suggests I've got a lot of work ahead to finish the book. More focussed on Mo Yan at the moment, though. He's much easier to read.

Also, congratulations Russel and co. on blogging for so much longer than blogs have existed. I seldom comment here now, but discussions I have been involved in , and people I have met both virtually and in person, have influenced my worldview no end. For the better I hope.

Public Address is a grand place to be a small part of, and I thank all of you who made it. Capture lights my life (is directly responsible for me getting my photo mojo back after being shaken off course). I revel with you when you do the big story; am informed by the deep thinkings; and am often awed by how amazingly smart the bloggers and commenters are. The quake threads have helped me stay sane and make sense of the whole thing. And friendships made and a fernery given (thanks Sofiie!).
