  • Hebe, in reply to Russell Brown,

This is a big shift from the original proposal, in which Fairfax took 51%.

That is an interesting shift. Wonder why.
People are worried for their jobs. I pick that one national Sunday paper will remain, with an Auckland edition.
I am concerned for the quality of news for Christchurch. The local voices and knowledge of The Press reporters are desperately needed in our city, but the advertising is so thin - some days it looks near 50/50.

  • Ben Austin, in reply to Rich Lock,

This last few months especially, their Twitter feed has become a joke.

It is interesting watching how they transform stories. The current one about the Russian river going red - they've carefully removed the geographic references in the tweet, despite other news sources seemingly having space to mention Russia,.

  • Kumara Republic, in reply to Hebe,

I hope the ComCom grows a pair and rejects the merger. But even if it does, I suspect the damage is done and Old Media has crossed the Rubicon. I can no longer sit on the sidelines and watch our broadsheets go tabloid by stealth.

If your ad blocker allows it, white-list any NZME/FF/NH articles by the likes of Matt Nippert and Kirsty Johnston, and leave it on for the yellow journalists in our midst. Sites like The Spinoff have started to creatively disrupt Old Media, and every little crowdfund counts. In the end though, we need what it takes to starve the yellow journalism beast. Further ideas are very welcome.

  • Ian Dalziel,

Good old Barry Soper, he always under-delivers, he ends his highly-principled piece on the Chiefs and NZRFU’s misogyny with this advice:

While they’re reflecting they should perhaps consult the dictionary and look up the word “sorry."

Advice he should take himself, as he earlier asserts:

It’s the principal that’s at issue here.

A rookie mistake if ever I saw one…
    – ‘my pal the principal’ was always my aide-memoire.

Unless he was talking about the investment in Rugby and male supremacy?

Subs and proofreaders have always made writers look good, management does their ‘star writers’ no favours by taking away the safety nets during their high-wire work!

  • simon g,

Did Hitler survive? Was OJ innocent?

    1) No, and no. Or ...

    2) See the Herald online, today.

I am not making this up. Whether they are is another question ...

  • Rich of Observationz,

I'm fairly sure that Hitler actually escaped from Germany, and via Argentina, moved to Springfield, where he murdered Marge Simpson and tried (with some success) to pin the blame on OJ. Also he's Barts dad.
