The Greens have always been considered radical to an average conservative voter no matter how I feel. Sooo why the expectation that Winnie the Poo should be any different.I don't see much change (if any) with all of the veteran politicians which is why I don't jump hoops for the mark 4,5 or 6 version of National. If one MP walks away with a bill passed under their watch, they will probably feel they are doing their job well, and if you watch the process it is obvious that time is not of the essence. It is politics. A word often used describe bullshit.

Immigration is a legitimate topic, and Tze Ming did some excellent thinking about how Maori and migrants might profitably relate. Part of the solution, not the "problem".
Thinking of migrants as a threat is rooted deeply in irrational fear, so it is not susceptible to rational arguments. That fear is a valid perspective, but I'm with others that it is not a useful one if it is whipped up by opportunistic cynical parasites who don't even believe it themselves. It's the easiest base in this country just like in Amerika and elsewhere.
Seniors deserve better, and organisations like Age Concern are doing a far more useful job than Winnie ever will. I agree with Stephen that thankfully most voters of all ages see through the oily hypocrite.

Are you saying that the land confiscations of the 19th century are entirely unrelated to immigration ? Many Maori feel that immigration led directly to marginalisation, ergo, immigration puts Maori aspirations at risk.
It took circa 150 years to start addressing the historical wrongs. We have had a long conversation in this country about the relationship between Maori and Pakeha, and I can understand how some feel that endlessly importing people with no knowledge of the background to the conversation (or indeed, that it even exists - we have a rare thing going on here), is a risky proposition.
I'm with Craig, I don't like racism of any stripe. But I don't think fear of being marginalised by sheer numbers is the same as bigoted fears based around someone's race.
One thing we need to really start discussing is population growth. How many people is too many ? Is Auckland full ? IMO, a lot of the value of living here derives from the comparatively low population density. Uncrowded beaches and all that.

So no actual lawbreaking: just more great steaming piles of hypocrisy.

Fair enough, Mikaere, but if the Maori Party (and the Greens) are going to be over in Oz pitching for the hearts and votes of 'Ngati Bondi', I hope Tariana goes and listens to the kind of shit whanau of mine are still getting after thirty years about Kiwi bludgers whose only stop on the way to the beach is to sign up for welfare, public housing etc. And if they do work, then they're just another bloody immigrant clogging the roads, crowding schools, pushing up house prices and blah blah blah. None of that's actually true, and it's sure doing nothing to address the serious infrastructure and demographic challenges Australia is facing.

Especially when there was that report that came out a couple of years ago that said the kiwis are the highest performing demographic in Australia, and that we totally outperform the Aussies.
Is it me, or do Australians have strong penchant for engaging in cognitive heuristics ? I always amazes me how simplistic (and racist) many Aussies are about the complex issues relevant to Aboriginal marginalisation. "They're just rock apes" is the depth of analysis I received on one occasion.
Lots of my kiwi mates who live in Oz say that they just can't discuss Aboriginal issues with their Aussie friends because of the torrent of racism that follows.
I suspect it's because that instead of having a national conversation about race relations, the Aussies have done their best to maintain Denial Mode.

I was wondering this just this morning - more people means more infrastructure & I think we're clearly pants at building infrastructure, be it roads, water or power generation. Maybe we need to encourage another million defaulting dads to Oz.
