Spent quite a bit of time over the break driving the band van. Had a great introduction in to the world of “Yacht Rock” courtesy of Tom Scott (along with the accompanying video):
Also, the Young, Gifted and Broke mixtape def got a good playin over the break.

Jaar is awesome, so looking forward to seeing him - his Resident Advisor podcast last year was sublime - http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?exchange=97 (still avail to dl) - beats fans subscribe via itunes, they'll all good!!!)
Last couple of days I've been listening to the free Stinky Jim tune (cheers dubdotdash for the heads up) its fab
Though summer for me is loads of oldies to compliment sun (hot) and beer (cold), from rock, to dance and always a healthy dose of reggae

In the days when CD writing was a thing, you could get bulk CD burners that took a big stack of blank CDs.
I wonder if one of those could be adapted to take a big stack of music CDs and rip them automatically.

Have been getting my big summer groove out of The Hotels. My family are sick of hearing it but I can’t resist.
Atlanta Rythm Section version of “Spooky” is best – guitar solos are great. In the best tradition of Jeff Skunk-Baxter, Larry Carlton, etc. Yacht rock! -

I went troppo in the Portil pre-Christmas sale, bought assorted albums by Augustus Pablo, Toy Love's Gluepot live, the Verlaines' Bird-Dog and Some Disenchanted Evening,Judee Sill Big Black's Songs About F--king and a few more including Len Lye's Composing Motion, a comp of the sounds made by his kinetic sculptures.

This whole Yacht Rock thing ... it was the music I heard when I was too young to afford to buy records and had to listen to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 for kicks.
You kids weren't even born.

and at risk of I'm not sure what, Liam Dann and I did a yacht rock night at Golden Dawn on Wednesday - we had a good time anyway. there was even some dancing.
just grabbed a nice 7 of Ace's How Long at Real Groovy with the proceeds so I hope we get another run or I'm looking like having some well dodgy dodginess taking up valuable record space.but to remove any curse I also found this great Louis Armstrong number...

Hey hey, I may have been in my tweens during that period, and was too into my Run DMC and New Edition to catch on to this sockless-music-movement, but I was there! ha ha. I remember Casey, that was our Sundays, listening while the old man was working on something in the garage.

One of the wonderful things from the past couple of years has been getting into the whole mixtape scene. Section.80 mixtape by Kendrick Lamar is well worth a listen but it doesn't beat this funky joint off his debut album Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City. One of my favourite tracks of the year and making me nostalgic for OutKast.
And "F*ck you all the time" off the Jeremirh Late Nights mixtape is an awesome piece of sex soul (& a little NSFW for shared listening). Be prepared to go in search of a cuddle...

Two gems amongst the general dross of National Radio summer programming: the Canadian series The Wire on the history of music and electricity, and the 2012 Powerstation concert by Elbow. In between times, I have been reading through David Byrne's How Music Works. Fascinating stuff on how formats have shaped the forms and future of music.
Spot you at Elvis C, Russell? Great interview with him in yesterday's Time Out, I have done my piece for AudioCulture on the Pretty Things 1965 concert and their return in December 2012, after a 'life-time ban' + their influence on local groups. It was fun to write.

Just thought I'd add my voice to the summertime recommended music/reads. Patti Smith's Just Kids is curiously satisfying, especially the way the story is intertwined with with Robert Mappelthorpe's. Also works as kind of extended liner notes to Twelve. David Byrne's How Music Works is finding its way around the readers in our house. His collaboration with St Vincent has been on the stereo a few times this summer. Finally, a plug for Ernest Cline's Ready Player One -- a regular feast of Eighties cultural and music references. Perfect accompaniment to Casey Kasem's American Top 40.

Ah, of course. I think I'd assumed Jaar was just another remix DJ, rather than an artist in his own right.

OK, so Yacht Rock: I had no idea, but I just read about it and realised that I am a bit of an idiot-savant afficionado (we DO have the entire Have a Nice Day CD series, for starters).
Also, it's Elvis Costello Day, everyone! We are excite! If you will, take a moment to experience Elvis' worst hair ever (and there is some stiff competition) and Pete Thomas drumming with speed-fuelled fury.

I can see it's going to be a bit like last year, with the electronic stuff being the most interesting for me -- not least because Laneway's pretty much the only place to hear it live. Just listening to Flume and thinking they'll be this year's SBTRKT.
Also listening to Cloud Nothings and hoping something decent will be on while they're playing.
