  • Martin Lindberg,

My essential indie listening is Pennie Black's Bloody Sunday Drive, 4-7pm Sundays on 95bFM, not least for the regular Trainspotting slot with Gonzo, who covers a lot of stuff I know about from first time round, and thus makes me feel wise as well as quite old.

I'm a big fan of the show following that one - Border Radio with Bernie Griffen. As the description says:

Bernie Griffen brings you a piece of American Country and Blues each week. Border Radio... it’s the tear in your beer, it’s the whisky grit, it’s Border Radio.

Bloody Sunday Drive is a bit too English for my liking.

  • peter mclennan,

    Thanks for the shout out!

re "You can listen to all the above over the internet (indeed, unless you live in or near Ponsonby, that’s the only way you’ll hear Base FM)."

AND it's on Freeview (and has been since around the time t launched), both terrestrial and satellite, channel 71.

  • Mike Williams,

Hey Russell - glad you're still listening in and that you've highlighted Generation Beats. You're absolutely right about it, of course. Cheers...

oh, and here's a track I dig from Mark Vanilau, off an album from Oakley Grennell that came out in 2008... http://loopcrew.bandcamp.com/track/oakley-o-g-grenell-moving-on-ft-mark-vanilau

  • bob daktari,

love radio the concept... and miss it horribly as a one time DJ/announcer/hack but hardly ever listen anymore - refuse to sit and endure "bad talking" of which radio is littered and never been that great on appointment listening

I'm more likely to grab podcasted shows after the fact for when I want to listen (file alongside TV and most content that can be digitalised)

Spotify - I am loving, the more time I spend with it the less time I have for itunes, soundcloud and all manner of other on and offline things - excluding vinyl which when I have decks, beer and time is my fave.

Spotify sure ain't perfect and the catalogue is patchy (aren't they all) and often times just plain weird - hate remastered and changed music I keep finding... don't like seeing artwork that is different to the physical versions of things I own, don't like how more often than not the release date is for the digital version of the album (I assume thats what it is) not the original street date of the release - as its confusing... love finding songs I've known about but never found to be able to listen to or often times afford when you had the rare chance to purchase... and all that music I've never wanted nor needed to own, wonderful!

Spotify has in fact replaced radio in my world, now if the few good hosts out there (and they are the exception) could migrate to add to my listening time I'd be most appreciative

I'm quite the fan of BaseFM in the morning, have to use the internet to get it, tho. Chip's tweets make it almost a multimedia experience. 3410 put me onto them, unfortunately I've never yet managed to hear one of his sets live, I've been having dinner with my folks every single time.

  • Kebabette,

I'd highly recommend a couple of RDU98.5 FM shows. The guys on The Joint have pretty eclectic & impeccable taste. Though I draw the line at A Sunny Day in Glasgow. Their tagline is "super dope selection of cosmic disco, French electro, tragic indie, hip hop, house, dub(step), nu-Krautrock, and the occasional guilty pleasure ..." Sensei Sessions with El Shaneo Grande on Saturday nights has some of the most gorgeous mixing/sampling and looping around.

I do live at home. But it's not my parents' home. We just have dinner regularly.

  • Ana Simkiss,

May I recommend when you're done with country on a Sunday night you switch to George for The Melting Pot. Just look at that playlist. And have a listen here.

DJ is a friend of mine who likes and plays (and mixes!) all things funky, a hip hop flavour but very broad taste. Russell maybe up your alley?

  • Robin,

Tuesday from 9pm: "Stinky Grooves" with Stinky Jim of NZ Label Round Trip Mars.

I have the feeling that people who make a point of seeking out good music from a wide range of countries and genre already know and love Stinky Grooves, but I just can't go past mentioning it. It's 3 hours of fresh and satisfying pleasure.

Every week I discover at least a few new bands/producers/artists that become long term favourites. Although I find music from far and wide - internet, radio and live - Stinky Grooves has informed my taste and introduced me to more of the music I love most over any other source.

I've listened and enjoyed a few of the John Peel Sessions. Good and interesting to hear those bands I think of as seasoned classics introduced as new and upcoming by John! For those interested there's a large selection of torrents easily findable.

John Peel fans... or musical nerds - this is a time killer (be warned):

Mr Peels record collection... in all its glory (well they're up to G)

as for Jim (stinky or not) - two of the best ears in the country I reckon

  • Grant McDougall,

Regarding the above-mentioned John Peel, apparently when he was in Auckland he popped in to Real Groovy and started browsing around. He asked some young woman staff member for help and was given a snide, why-should-I-help you type reply, because, of course, there's no way a 70-year-old English tourist would know anything about music, is there ?

Somewhat baffled at his dismissal, Mr Ravenscroft then politely left the shop, walked around the corner to Gary Steel's shop Beautiful Music on K Rd. Where, of course, Gary, or whoever was on duty, were a little more clued up as to who this customer actually was...so they treated him with the respect he deserved and thus it was Mr Ravenscroft spent his dosh there and not at Groovy.

  • Mark Graham,

May I recommend a few shows on George FM.

The Dose on Saturday midday to 2pm is superb with Barnie Duncan and Selector Sam playing excellent classic underground soul/funk and afrobeat.
followed by The Saucer with Sam E and then The Uptown Boogie with T Rice and Hudge

Sundays features the inestimable Cian from Conch Records on at 10 with the very good Earshot – this man knows underground beats. Sundays right through on George is excellent with standouts being Cian’s show, DJ Nynety at midday, Chocolate Sunday at 4pm with Gene Rivers, Bahaco with Bobbie Brazuka, Cian’s Brazilian partner in Conch, and then Geezer Guy with the Greatest Show on Earth at 8.

    Other standouts include:
Monday features the international class of Recloose and Frank Booker at 6pm with Hit It and Quit It. Nuff Said…with Tommy Flowers on Wed at 10pm.

Sadly, George recently changed its midweek morning lineup, removing some of the best DJs in Auckland – Jason Eli (now consigned to Saturday mornings at 6am(!), Phillipa and Soane have gone MIA and Mediaworks has replaced them with more mainstream show featuring Tom, the erstwhile DJ liaison guy. The gutting of George continues.

I keep thinking maybe I should change it up and get off Morning Report in the mornings -- especially when I see what Chip's playing.

  • Steve Withers,

I listen to radio, but I have to say there is only one station I ever listen: National Radio. I can't bear the "morning crew" garbage and the ads annoy me beyond endurance. Yes, I am older and grumpy...and I don't have to listen to any of it. That said, I have recently been catching a bit of George FM via the Internet and some BASE FM via Freeview. All is not lost.....but the chances of randomly stumbling across great radio these days is remote...and I haven't been interested or motivated enough to seek it out. My kids (19 and 24) are opposites. One listens to The Edge and other gets everything via social networking 'word of mouth'.....Tumblr and Reddit, it seems. I've signed up for Spotify, but haven't had much time to just.....listen.

NatRad. Hard to beat for information and head food.

  • Peter Darlington,

Thanks for that Russ! We're pretty rough, as you probably know, but we're having a great time. Funny thing is, people I talk to here in Nelson are always all "wow, that's amazing of you to do that, so cool for a dad to get involved with their son's interests etc.." when in actual fact, it's quite the opposite and I feel totally privileged that he's prepared to hang with his old man on a music show on the radio. Think about that for a moment, all his friends, gf etc... are all listening in, he's taking quite the risk of public humiliation (probably the worst thing that can happen to a 17 yr old boy) and yet he's given it a go and it works. I'm very very proud of him and don't for a minute think that I'm anything other than the really lucky one.

In terms of radio, it's still a key way for me to hear new sounds from people I respect and trust. I'm a regular listener of Peter Mac's "Ring the Alarm" show on Saturday mornings but am restricted by the kids football season so tend to be a Spring to Autumn listener. His selection is superb and he's introduced me to a load of great material over the last few years.

Can I also sing the praises of the mighty Beeb who don't geolock their audio like they do their television programming. There's almost unlimited goodness on there. I try to tune in to Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show most weeks on BBC. I liked his Radio 1 format better than R6 but the quality of the tunes is still the same and he's a crate digger extroadinaire. I also like Benji B's mix of hefty hiphop and late night beats to get me through Sunday evening's ironing dramas.

Also, still with BBC, Toddla T is doing a Jamaican 50th Anniversary Special that will be available for the next week here. If you can get past Toddla's wite boy Sheffield/Jamaican patois the show will be a decent fun celebration of modern Dancehall. David Rodigan's BBC 2 50th Anniversary mix will be a rare treat as well.

  • Steve Barnes,

I can't bear the "morning crew" garbage

Me neither, I despise the constant reference to the mental health of the participants. Yes, I know you must be mental to get up that early and play the same three records over and over_ but you don't have to keep on about it.
And what did I hear today? Mikey Havoc is going to Radio Hauraki. The world is ending I tell you.

  • Danielle,

It's a bit amazing to me how well 'Walking on Thin Ice' lends itself to remixes. It's not something we would have expected in 1981, is it?

  • Kebabette,

Speaking of downpitched vocals - drop your vinyl of Sam Fox's Touch me (go on, you know you have it) down a good few RPM and you have the heaviest Germanic dark dark metal track.
