Oh dear, are we going there again?

What ever happened to the days of theatre-ing a thread?

  • Craig Ranapia,

Home theatre with all the bells and whistles, and screw what it's doing to the balance of trade! Just get off your arses and participate, that's all I'm saying - because by international standards, it's absurdly easy to do so in New Zealand.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

On the other side of Wikipedia mayhem, yesterday Ruban from the Mint Chicks commanded fans to rewrite their Wikipedia entry "with opinionated, objective, surreal crap".

    Chaos ensued:

Forming in petrie dishes, they began by playing lesbian punk house parties and low profile shows (for which they were paid with extended sessions of cunnilingus) before being discovered by acclaimed New Zealand independent record label Son Ova Nun Records.

The page now has a hilariously stern Wikipedia warning stating "the factual accuracy of this article is disputed."

Wow, now someone's reverted & protected the article. AND they berated everyone, including the band, for vandalism, & attempting to "compromise the integrity of wikipedia". Hahahahaha!

  • kmont,

Yeah I thought that was pretty funny too. Naughty, naughty vandals interfering with the holy wiki.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Oh, good old Wikipedia. But the subverted version can be viewed in the Wikipedia history.

And the incident itself has been added to the Mint Chicks' Wikipedia entry, which is nice.

(I'm a little annoyed that I found out about it too late to change their discography to include "Pluck the Golden Lute".)

  • Russell Brown,

Sorry to be an old stick-in-the-mud, but you don't own your Wikipedia entry. If the Mint Chicks can get people to mess with their entry, then can Exxon Mobil hire people to do the same thing?

That said, it's all there in the history and some of it is bloody funny.

What they should do is get someone to build a non-Wikipedia page with the Wiki code and let people go wild there. Then add it as an external link from the "proper" article.

  • Joanna,

Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! Pikelets? FUCK YEH BRAH!

Squee! Also, anyone want to post a link to Stephen Colbert editing his own wikipedia entry live on air?

There's wikis on NZmusic.com now. I'm just saying...

  • Michael Fitzgerald,

The idea of creating your own reality has got Michael Laws thinking.
With his prohibition of gang insignia local bill.

Not only can this be extended to any sign or symbol - so the Rotarians & Masons are screwed. Sign & symbol extend to, tatoos, handshakes, gestures & colours- red hoodies etc.

  • Tony Christie,

Looks like the Howard gov't in Australia have learned from their YouTube experience, and are now spreading the love to Wikipedia:

    Particularly scary, though not surprising:
"WikiScanner also identifies employees of another department, Defence, as the most prolific Wikipedia contributors in Australia."

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Today the Herald reports that someone from the Ministry of Justice has been editing Wikipedia articles:

Another two edits added information to an article about English band Echo & the Bunnymen.

This is not news-worthy. This is normal use of Wikipedia. Good on this MoJ employee for contributing.

If someone ever ran a Wikiscanner check on the IPs of my employer (which I'm sure has been done), they'll probably find the various things I've edited on Wikipedia, including - gasp - the time when I changed a comma at the end of a paragraph to a full stop.

I aren't as skilled at this here interweb as some but would be interested to know what the origin was of of this entry at Wikipedia on the page about the vile Jack Abramoff

The scandal is known for being completely blown out of proportion by Democrats and the media for political purposes.

I took it out using my awesome Wikiskills, but it's still there in the history. Couldn't see at a glance who'd added it, but it was obviously inappropriate.
