  • Chris Waugh, in reply to Russell Brown,

How much of T3 on demand is geoblocked for you at the moment, out of interest?

On the assumption that TV3 simply blocks anybody coming from a non-NZ IP address....

I've never had any troubles watching TV3 news, either segments or entire broadcasts. Campbell Live, also. I currently have the 60 Minutes June 10 broadcast (Bronwyn Pullar) playing. Sport has been a bit more dodgy, not that I watch much of it. I had trouble seeing much of the Rugby World Cup, apparently because of all the licencing deals that are done around such things. Pretty much everything else I've tried to watch has been geoblocked.

So from what I can tell, if Media 3 is put in the same category as news and current affairs, then us expats should be able to watch it.

Excellent. That's very helpful, thank you.

Still, it only diminishes a little the gathering gloom around the demise of TVNZ7. I was part of a panel at the uni last night (with David Beatson, Claire Curran, Mark Servian and Bomber Bradbury), facing an overflowing lecture theatre full of citizens enraged at the decision to let the channel die,

At the mirror meeting in Dunedin a sound engineer stood up and said the vital thing was to make sure the TVNZ7 "space", "bandwidth" "airwaves" (sorry, the technical term escapes me for the moment) is set aside for a public channel, or else, he said, it would take a lot more than it costs currently to get it running again. So don't let it get sold with the rest of TVNZ!

  • Rob Stowell,

Great news :) Deserved and we are the better served for it!
(Not ready to give up on Save TVNZ 7- even if it has to become 'Remember TVNZ 7' it's built a very strong following. We'll be considerably poorer (and crosser) when the switch is flicked off.)

  • tonyH,

Well done Media7 team (5 years!) and those at TV3 with the vision to recognise that continued excellence. I shared Robyn’s concerns about other 7 content but your reply to her strikes the right note, Russell – could the likes of Kim D rise above donating to Banks and underwrite such a venture?

This news is encouraging enough to spur a longtime PA lurker to venture a comment, and allays some of our genuine misgivings about imminent return to NZ after 3 years in the Gulf. Hard News and all the PA blogs and commenters have been a lifeline here, providing needed perspectives on the MSM headlines of unedifying government and its apparent social consequences.

PS Never had a problem watching Media7 here either.

Fantastic news, and the timeslot is completely irrelevant - I don't think I've ever watched the show live.

Sorry for flogging a dead horse, but did anyone suggest to Curran that if her party is serious about public television they might want to rethink putting a kill switch on the funding next time? Blah blah of course I'd say that etc. but really...

  • Ian Dalziel,

    Show time...
Good news that the show survives...
But a sad indictment on TVNZ that they would foster and raise a fledging show to adulthood, then kick it out of the nest to fly with the opposition - why would they do that? Doesn't show much business acumen, but I guess we know about their issues with quality and thinking folk.
And at least you haven't been tucked behind a pay wall with the other TVNZ treasures....

Hey Russ, was in the Taipa Tavern t'other night. What was on ? TVNZ7. I asked Fruitcake if she knew it was shutting down. Nobody in the pub knew and was most disappointed.Today I asked a friend if he knew it was shutting down. He was really upset. No body mentioned it past Orewa, including those trying to save it. I see more and more, the Far North is ignored and there are many enlightened people up here.Happy to say ,not many agree with the lot running the country. Good to see you have survived. Now we just need to hear from Damian and Wallace too please :)

It will only screen then. I'll let our host give taping session details when he's ready.

Glad your new theme is "totally boss". That's like soooo awesome. You are one random dude. Just don't look in the mirror or check the birthdate on your passport and you'll be ace, totally ace.

Actually I like the show. Don't like old guys trying to be hip, though.

That really got to me. I just wanted to watch people back home being happy about winning the Cup, but if a NZ media segment had even a fraction of match footage in it, it was verboten. You'd think there'd be some sort of fair-use provision, but no - you have to ask what they thought they were protecting.

Actually, 99% of the time I was just looking for highlights, but denied about half of that time. Then there was the final, which found me reading out the NZ Herald's live 'coverage' and the usually more up-to-date Chinese-language informal updates on Sina Weibo to my mum, and it was a bit galling to have to tell my mum, "Hey, somebody on Sina Weibo said five minutes ago that we scored, but the Herald hasn't gotten around to the scrum seven minutes before that yet."

And, y'know, I was mostly pretty happy about spending the RWC in China because I was insulated from all the extra bollocks, but it would've been nice to see a bit of the action without having to head down to some skody expat bar.
