  • recordari, in reply to Russell Brown,

The D-Ring at the main stage was introduced after some really dangerous crowd surges when (ugh) Limp Bizkit played, and it has prevented a repeat of that.

Anything that prevents a repeat visit from Limp Bizkit is Ok in my book. ;-)

Anyone else going to the free concert in Shed 10 tonight? Actually, please don't, so I can have more space to myself.

    Isn't hindsight wonderful.

Just clarifying - I'm not just shrugging my shoulders there. I'd like to know what went wrong too. I reckon there might have been just too many fingers in the pie and no-one singularly responsible ?

If they were selling decent beer it would infuse the wood and create a patina, also killing any microbes through alcoholic content. Mixture of H*******n and H*******n vomit, not so much.

This has been a problem all along. Central government came up with Queen’s Wharf and then made it local government’s problem. Even a few weeks ago, no one was clear on where things would be located.

So the tupperwaka (another govt fait accompli), originally planned for Queen’s Wharf, got shifted to the Viaduct late in the piece – and the giant rugby ball, long destined for Aotea Square, was put on Queen’s Wharf at the last moment, thus further reducing the capacity there. The RWC minister’s office has been confusing the hell out of other stakeholders for two years now.

Which casts a certain light on Murray McCully’s furious phone calls to council leaders on Friday night.

Though transport is not the main point, as I've said on the thread where we've been discussing this.

Focusing on transport operations without considering what drove un-catered demand is not going to help, though the various political 'leaders' involved may welcome a scapegoat or two.

As well as the transport problems, another issue is that instead of providing additional fanzones at Henderson, Manukau and Albany on Friday night, cup organisers put all their resources into "the biggest party Auckland has ever seen" on the waterfront, knowing Party Central on Queens Wharf could accommodate only 12,000 people.

But about 200,000 people poured into downtown Auckland.

Now why would you ask Auckland Transport to tell you the answer to that?

  • DexterX, in reply to Sacha,

The point of my "posts" is that "spreading out" the opening event to Henderson, Albany and Manukau would have be a better planned solution one that could have been put in place prior to the precipitation of the problem.

  • Sacha,

Before even a hasty review is done, both Brown and Key seem to have decided to pin this on the train operator.

Prime Minister John Key says the blame for for Friday's Rugby World Cup transport debacle lies firmly with Auckland Transport and rail company, Veolia.
    ...

Auckland Mayor Len Brown is expecting a briefing from officials today on what went wrong, but is already pointing the finger at train company Veolia.

Michael Barnett at least mentions the role of event planning as well. And the Greens note some long-term causes and implications.

“Everyone is pointing fingers, trying to pass the buck faster than a Sonny Bill Williams offload," says transport spokesman Gareth Hughes.

"But the roots of Auckland’s transport woes are a deep bias in transport planning and Government funding.”

Mr Hughes says that over the next 10 years, the Government plans to spend seven times more on motorways than on public transport.

And why wouldn't they: To be perfectly cynical, a weekend of "OMFG, train-fail ruined our big night" headlines are a big, easy target. No politician has ever lost a poll point sledging the evil foreign corporation.

And were the multiple pushings of the trains' emergency buttons real or hoaxes? If they were indeed hoaxes, then the compensation for inconvenienced passengers should come out of the hoaxters’ pockets.

Sounds like they may have resulted from panic about being trapped in crowded carriages without adequate communication. And from people determined to get to the bloody game if only they could get off the train.

    Ak • Since May 2008 • 19745 posts Report

  • DexterX,

From what I am hearing on the radiio - trains were left standing - with doors shut and no ventilation and those fortunate enough to have the air con on were effectively recycling the air inside.

In response to being trapped in trains people pushed emergency buttons and tried to force doors to open them.to let air in or just get out and walk.

Some people were stranded on trains for almost three hours.and being stranded on a train for an hour and a half was common.

All around it is a massive fail which undermines the future (the public/ having no confidence) in Public Transport.

Public Transport in Auckland needs to go back into Public ownership.

I guess we should just be thankful that nobody was injured, or killed, because their "determination" took the form of a basic rail safety fail.

With no respect whatsoever, Dexter, perhaps the next time some fuckwit triggers a emergency stop or decides to go walkabout in a working rail yard they should be prosecuted. I know the media isn't interested in reporting this, but I'm reliably informed there were people who were in distress on halted trains who notified train staff, were promptly (and safely) attended to. It's not pleasant being on a crowded, stuffy train or bus, especially when it's been delayed. But having seen the trauma train drivers go through after a work-related fatality, I'm rather short of sympathy for people who were so damn irresponsible.
