  • BenWilson,

Find out what's wrong before that person turns into Michael Laws ...

Nice one. But I don't think the smallness of the country contributes anything to reducing rivalry. Small towns are notorious for their feuding.

The extent of the problem is totally your call, though. You're not responsible for dragging Ralston out of his fug. It just might be a nice thing to do, you clearly have some respect for the guy.

  • Kyle Matthews,

It takes the complete lack of a village to raise a child, you mean?

Well in this case it was complete lack of parents.

Nah, just that from my point of view the problem that might warrant such an action doesn't really exist.

Russell, the way you're talking down this serious conflict in your life has me very concerned.

I think we need a Royal Commission on the issue, where everyone can really get down to the nitty gritty of how they're feeling, followed by a PAS and Herald readers big group hug.

  • Hilary Stace,

Heather - can you remember who the Radio Live person was who mentioned Autism NZ? We always need money, and that shows a public media awareness that should be followed up. But personally,I don't think it is ethical to use violence or blood sports as fundraisers (although few charities turn down gambling or alcohol money).

I do know a babysitter who can cope with any child (and also likes them all). She's otherwise occupied at the moment but may be occasionally available. if you are interested I'll ask her.

Pity I'm not in Welly, Giovanni. All my friends' kids used to be silenced with the threat of going to Uncle Ian and Aunty Jackie's house for a wee while. And I'm willing to bet there isn't a rambunctious 3 year old girl alive who can withstand my "look".

Actually, that'd be great. It may not be immediately insofar as number three is a little too young (and unweaned) to be left, but I don't despair of a future when I can go out with my better half again.

In the meantime, I think we should organise a great blend with Jackie and see if her "look" is stronger than Lucia's. A veritable clash of the titans!

I don't know about that one, Giovanni. My methods work, but I'm not sure that you'd approve of all of them!

We give little girls with strong personalities to my strong-personalitied 11 year old daughter. Either they sort each other out or form an unholy alliance, and it's interesting to watch either way.

  • Jackie Clark,

Now, 11 year old girls are a different story altogether, I find. They like it when you don't take any shit, but they are far better at arguing their point of view than little girls. Reason #567 why I am glad to be childless.

There are some things we muggles don't need to know.

  • Heather W.,

    Hilary,

The person on Radio Live making stuff up would have been Matthew Hooten. He did not originally use the correct name so someone else must have put him right.

Hooten? - well what a jolly surprise.

*sigh* Well, at least I don't recall him giving Clint Rickards an unchallenged platform (or two) to smear a certain someone as a mentally unstable liar. Seriously, what is it going to take before a talkback radio host faces any kind of real and lasting accountability for telling objective reality to go fuck itself?

Dude, I've been watching Sean Hannity interview Rush Limbaugh on Fox News. Reality gets a complete and utter rogering there ...

Why don't you just eat your own weight in psychoactive drugs -- sure, you're going to die a horrible death, but at least it would be a comparatively dignified and painless way to go.

And if we're going to hold up Sean Innanity as a standard, that's not setting the bar low. It's taking the bar to the bottom of the Marianas Trench and digging another couple of miles. I'm all for a free press, and the rowdy marketplace of ideas where error and truth go at it with bare knuckles, but why does it have to be so damn hard? :)

End time? Maybe the echo chamber is reaching its logical conclusion and they're all going to disappear up some fundamental flag-draped orifice.

Oh, I'm sure the wonderful eco-system that is the American punditocracy will throw up plenty of fatuous liberal pundits to fill the vacant niche in no time at all.

Camels through the needle's eye? Don't forget the famous Limbaugh nether-orifice cyst.

And, Sacha, before you come back with "well, he would say that" -- please watch any random segment of Hardball with Chris Matthews and tell me if you've come out of it any the wiser.
