  • jon_knox,

I see the media junkies have got their fix then.

Judder's is wearing off already and Giovanni seems like he is just about peaking.

  • Max Call,

it felt like the holograms were there for another purpose (outside of the Presidential Election - or any other newsworthy reason) altogether.

    Creepy.

  • Mark Harris,

I think the Repubs are toast, as a single party. I heard one guy, I think on BBC, say that Obama had "broken the Republican coalition" and I think that is indeed what has happened. I don't think the Repubs as we know them can put it back together, especially if Palin is embraced by the 'base'. There are more than a few who have been Republicans all their lives who were not happy with the way the campaign went, who are tired of the theo-cons. I think the American right is about to get as fractured as our own. Which is kinda scary as that could mean no firm check on the Democrats. Let's hope the moral high ground lasts the term.

You ain't seen me peaking, buddy, not even close.

(And no, I don't know what I mean by that either.)

    Minnesota at 99% returns

    Coleman (R) 42% 1,202,966
    Franken (D) 42% 1,200,649
    Barkley (I) 15% 434,270

I can hear the lawyers being started from here. ;-) At 2300 votes, I'd go for the recount as well.

It's hard to know who Barkley hurt more but as Jesse "The Body" Ventura's successor, he's not in the same league.

  • BenWilson,

As a software designer I couldn't help but notice that whoever made the awesome touchscreen thing needed to rethink putting controls on both sides of the screen so the presenter can't avoid having to put their hands in the way of the screen all the time. Touchscreens have always been a gimmick, except on a PDA.

Oh and you guys realize they weren't really holograms right? A cool effect, but still an effect.

I don't know why goats, they just seem....right.

    Update from Alaska:

    Stevens 104,564 48%(Incumbent)
    Begich 100,968 47%

CNN have this as still too close to call.

Which is pretty unbelievable really, considering that Stevens is now a convicted felon. Or do Alaskans not think federal anti-corruption laws apply to them? Weird shite really: on the one hand, they support Palin who wants to be the 'anti Washington machine' candidate, but on the other they support the archetypal Washington machine candidate. And how much do you want to bet that Palin's coyness about how she voted was to avoid disclosing that she voted for Stevens?

  • Craig Ranapia,

But to end on a positive note, would any of us blame Obama for calling one or two Democrat pundits, columnist and blogger who slagged him as a wimpy Oreo with a Messiah complex whose red-state outreach strategy was, at best, hideously naive if not actively suicidal and and saying something like this:

"This is President-elect Barrack Hussein Obama. Faaaaarrk you! Peace out."

If Stevens gets convicted, Palin gets to name his replacement.

    Georgia:

    Chambliss(R) 1,768,378 50%(Incumbent)
    Martin (D) 1,629,867 46%
    Buckley (L) 120,840 4%

Buckley's a Libertarian, so I don't think he would have taken any Dem vote, and Chambliss has been fairly bipartisan which may have irked the right more than the left. I think this will go to the Reps, though (100K+ is pretty hard to pull back on a recount) and that will prevent the Dems from having a super majority

  • Hilary Stace,

This post must hold the record for the longest thread ever at PA. And a great historical record of the US election in NZ. I've been away from computers and TV most of the day but here is the Obama win unfolding. Did you know it is also Parihaka Day? We had fireworks in Wellington to celebrate Obama's win, with crowds in the streets just like in the US.

  • Mark Harris,

Are you sure about that, Giovanni? I know they have some weird shit about how replacements are selected, but wouldn't they have to hold a by-election?

Although this would explain why Stevens refused to pull out when convicted. Strange that convicted felons can't vote but they can still stand for office...

Georgia has just been uncalled - they forgot to count 600k provisional ballots! And in mostly liberal areas. They're not likely to swing the Prez count, but extremely likely to push Chambliss under 50%, which means that he and Martin will have a runoff election.

And highlight for me was the mention of disabled people in his acceptance speech. What a great day for inclusion. I was collecting my son from his guitar lesson and here was this inspiring oratory coming from the car radio. Made me feel all hopeful about the world.

Nope, the current copyright thread is at 36 pages, and the Veitch thread and the abortion thread went longer. But none got this big this quickly.
