  • bob daktari,

the greg wilson mix link isn't working - or for me anyways

http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/ for loads of sunshine inducing goodies

saw mr wilson on a boat party in sydney about 3 years ago... best thing I've been too for, oh, too long, magic - shame some vital parts on his reel to real melted in the sunshine

    GW for BDO!

Indeed, sad to hear of Dan Birch's passing. Beat Rhythm Fashion still get a lot of play round my way

  • Robyn Gallagher,

I'm surprised at how sad and wistful "It's Rugby" sounds. Like someone taking a long look back and realising they've forgotten to pay tribute to rugby. Rather than being an anthem for rugby supporters, maybe it's better suited for those of us who aren't really into the game, but yet can't escape the massive role it takes in New Zealand culture.

I follow him and Leftside Wobble – both old-schoolers from Britain – on Soundcloud and I do dream of getting Leftside over to play a Public Address event one day.

Also, that link worked for me but I redid it anyway.

Yeah. It’d be nice to have something like that amongst the dance music lineup. They could drop a shithouse Australian trance DJ to make room …

I gather Jordan wrote the song during the last RWC. The vintage clips from the old days foster the sense of wistfulness you mention.

Mariachi El Bronx coming to BDO was a huge, awesome surprise - if you've not checked them out I suggest you do, it will surely be a highlight. A HIGHLIGHT.

  • George Darroch,

Line up's pretty weak, so far. Girl Talk is excellent for such an event, and Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All would be interesting to see (although I'm always curious to see how similar groups fit stadium events).

Didn't dig the 1979 remake as much as I liked... you start to wonder if you're getting older when you hear someone play a song that defined a decade for you (that album, really), and dismiss it within a few seconds.

Who I'm really enjoying and who's playing the BDO? David Dallas. This is the standout off his album.

He's giving the entire thing away on his site; you have to admire his bravery and ambition. Apparently it's paying off. MTV, 90210, supporting Talib Kweli and Mos Def next week...

Kimbra: Non-BDO (AFAIK) but as enthused about by Amanda Palmer on twitter this morning

    Kimbra: Non-BDO

Doesn't make much sense given her role in Australia's recent chart-topper.

He basically looked at it and realised that retail sales of recordings wasn't where his money was coming from. For the time being it makes sense to have as many people hear his record as possible.

He's also the reason you don't hear Leilani Momoisea on Radio NZ any more -- they're in New York together. Now there's a handsome couple.

A bloody awful lineup for BDO--just when I was thinking of giving it another go. Bogan heaven, methinks.

  • Russell Brown,

Oh, I forgot to note that Odd Future are in the lineup. That's Tyler the Creator's crew. Watch that space for media moral outrage.

  • John Armstrong,

Looks like I'll just have to keep praying for Radiohead..

Unless something radical turns up in subsequent announcements I'll be giving this a miss too, although seeing Battles again is a most tempting thought (even though Braxton has left, apparently.)

For what it's worth, I loved Soundgarden all those centuries ago, but Chris Cornell's dodgy solo work since then just makes me nervous. I really don't want to have those wonderfull memories tainted by, you know, reality. The first sign of old age, me thinks.

Turning to much better music than this BDO tosh, just listened to the version of Richard Thompson's "Dimming of the Day" on the new relesase by Alison Krauss & The Union Station.

So beautiful it makes you want to cry....

Heard Tiny Ruins on a show on bFM this week. Her voice hurts my heart strings.
Recorded at Late @ the Museum an' all. 'You've got the kind of nerve I like.'

Oh, look, another BDO will pass me by. Who the hell are half these people? Although, if I was rich, I would go just to see Angus and Julia Stone.

that dude makes some mighty fine sounds & perfect grooves, am often listening to Leftside while writing/working :)

    Beings Rest Finally…
Sorry to hear about Dan Birch, I just thought about them a coupla days ago (spotting a BRF number plate!) and recalled the graffiti that appeared in wellington 2 or 3 decades ago BRF: Off the Beat, Out of Rhythm, Into Fashion (or similar), it was a competitive (and bitchy) town back then!
I went to a coupla parties at Dan and Nino’s flat on The Terrace (May’ve even taken Chris Knox to one when he was filming a segment on Wellington bands – IIRC Blurry Remembering Faculties ) when I was sorta trying to help with Naked Spots Dance – The Four Stars LP (Wellington sampler) still gets a play now and then. and Rob Mayes has done sterling work in keeping BRF available check them out here

  • Russell Brown,

Also, this is bloody arresting: British singer Alex Clare's cover of Etta James' 'Damn Your Eyes'.

And his dubstep version of 'When Doves Cry'.

    Really quite different.

There's also a pretty average Jamiriquois-type track called 'Too Close' on the album. It appears now that the smart performer goes all over the genre map. Theophilus London is another example.
