For sure, all I'm saying is it changes the long-term cost analysis which currently includes emission costs. So in the long-term, the cost/benefit argument for completing the motorway network may look slightly different, especially if in the meantime we have installed a decent public transport network.
-
Didn't the environmental benefit get included in the business case for electrifying the trains?
-
There may come a point when the Waterview Connection makes economic sense again. However, I cannot see that point being now or any time in the next 10 years.
There are other projects that need this money more, and are more justifiable. This is turning into a tunnel v surface option debate, when it should be a "can we justify spending at least $2.2 billion on a 4.5 km road" argument.
-
Apropos of nothing much, so excuse the diversion: Editing the Herald falls foul of its subject.
And big ups to PA System's own ScottY for helping out and making me feel bad about teasing lawyers.

Aren't we well past that point? The decision to complete the Western Ring has been made and now it's about how to do it? You'd like to think that the decision to complete was based on realistic costings (although I accept perhaps not)
-
The decision has been made to complete the Western Ring Route, however the decision about WHEN this happens is still open I would guess.
How about after we invest in a CBD rail loop and rail to the airport?
Anyway, I look forward to hearing Steven Joyce pluck something magic out of thin air on this. I just worry with the RMA changes that are happening he will go with a surface option but people won't have much opportunity under the weakened RMA to oppose it.
-
Right, thanks again for the knowledge (bro). I'm all for the rail loop although I prefer Richard Simpson's canal and high-speed ferrys to the airport cause it's, ya know, cool =)
I also wonder if funding for integrated ticketing should be thrown into that mix... -
Auckland's population will be 2.3 million by 2050
If they live in the present inner suburbs, that would be fine. The city could grow to 4 or 5 million on its current footprint and become *easier* to get around (because proper public transit would become economically viable).
If they live north of Albany and south of Drury, we're stuffed.
-
Rich, we're stuffed either way without significant public transport investment. However, I would agree that we're MORE stuffed if the MUL gets removed and we sprawl like crazy.

Everyone should just move to Kaiwaka.

Move and widen SH1 in the middle of it. then one could build a bridge and just get over it.:)
-
Find Mr McShane's house and build SH1 right through it I say.

You should feel bad. We're sensitive souls.

Better still, drive the bulldozer through, while he's asleep. And display the resultant trophy on the wall in Te Papa.

So, we only need to veer slightly to the side and pick up a twofer! FTW!

i dunno... this sounded a bit like meltdown too...
All of you dumb fucks, Christopher -- plague on all your houses, and I hope it hurts.

No fair!! Bringing facts to a rant is inexcusable.

Max:
Well, yes. I have a pretty high crap tolerance (on the basis that if you dish it out, got to be able etc.), but I don't take kindly to being called a partisan hack -- no matter how passive-agressive it may be. Sorry, just makes me a wee bit cranky.
Meanwhile, sweetie, perhaps we could leave WhaleOily cracks about running bulldozers through someone's home for well...

Jebus, Craig, breathing seems to make you cranky lately.

Perhaps Owen McShane saw this.
Some call it the Princess Diana syndrome,
