  • Paul Campbell,

And just to add to the confusion there's this

"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

  • Russell Brown,

She is anti pork & anti corruption in her own party.

Actually, she was a director of 527 group called (hilariously) Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service that channelled corporate donations to Stevens and others. She was endorsed by Stevens and they made a campaign commercial together.

She canned the infamous bridge to nowhere.

Actually, that's a myth, based on her lying in her first speech with McCain.

She campaign in 2006 on a build-the-bridge platform and strongly defended the project. Even after Congress moved to end the embarrassment and deny the project, her administration kept some of the money and actually carried on the boondoggle.

McCain met her only once and made a decision. That speaks volumes about both of them. decisiveness is one.

    That's. Just. Silly.

  • Russell Brown,

"After complaints by the Palin family in 2005 Mr Wooten was suspended briefly for shooting a moose illegally, and using a Taser gun on his 10-year-old stepson."

Wooten's clearly a jerk, although it's probably worth making clear that he didn't shoot the kid with a taser, he put the electrodes on the boy's skin and briefly turned it on -- at the kid's request. Which hardly makes it a sensible thing to do.

But Wooten was investigated on all allegations and given a 10-day suspension, reduced to five on appeal.

Palin subsequently used the office of Governor (and its officials) to pursue what seems like a family feud. Even her husband called Walter Monegan, the Public Safety Chief, demanding that he sack Wooten. When he didn't oblige, she sacked Monegan and hired a guy who was forced out by a sexual harassment scandal (one she knew about) two weeks later.

What claims, exactly, were you making for her judgement?

McCain met her only once and made a decision. That speaks volumes about both of them. decisiveness is one.

Testicles, Sage. It says nothing about Palin, but volumes about McCain. Unserious is one. Profoundly cynical is two. "Does nothing to back the meme that McCain is the paragon of sober, considered judgement vs. the slick but hollow rock star Barry Obama" is three.

    Shall I continue?

    And you wrote:

She is anti gay marriage yet vetoed a bill infringing gay rights.

    Oh, you mean this

Gov. Sarah Palin vetoed a bill Thursday that sought to block the state from giving public employee benefits such as health insurance to same-sex couples.

In the first veto of an administration that isn't yet a month old, Palin said she rejected the bill despite her disagreement with a state Supreme Court order earlier this month that directed the state to offer benefits to same-sex partners of state employees.

Advice from her new attorney general said the bill passed by the Legislature was unconstitutional, she said.

"Signing this bill would be in direct violation of my oath of office," Palin said in a prepared statement released by her administration Thursday night.

Doesn't it really say something sad about the state of the GOP, when I'm expected to regard Gov. Palin as a profile in courage for doing her damn job? I know that puts her a step ahead of the theo-con base that are treating her like a rock star, but really...

Left-wing websites such as the Daily Kos are leading the chorus of disapproval for now.

David Frum and other contributors to the National Review who've been cited and linked to here? Charles Krauthammer? God, Sage, is total psychosis really what passes for conserbatism within the GOP these days?

I was much more fit and able after the births of my second-born twins, than I was after the birth of my singleton eldest.

if it's any consultation i'm planning to have 2nd chef back to work within 15mins of delivery. will just pour a glucose drink into her and put her on the island bay bus heading back towards lambton queue.

the infant will take a few days to work out the photocopier, so... we won't pay it till then.

    </eggcorn sillyness>

but in all seriousness, the women who don't go back to work quickly tend to be those whose childcare costs exceed their potential earnings. or, those in roles where their smarts can't be substituted. governors for example.

A friend of mine wrote to me this morning to say that Christian conservative Palin's announcement of her unmarried teen daughter's pregnancy as a *positive* rebuttal to nutty rumours proved that we live in the craziest of times. This whole story really is wacky! I'm starting to wonder if her candidacy will 'hold'...

Has anyone linked to the spoof Sarah Palin's blog yet? It's very funny. I particularly liked the guest posts from Todd, snowmobiling dude extraordinaire.

Feminism is a mere construct of those that have the power to divide those that struggle to be heard. You have the vote, use it.

<clasped hands, shining eyes> Oh Steve, tell me more of this 'feminism' with which you are clearly so familiar! I earnestly yearn for philosophical and behavioural guidance from you!

call mccain unserious and cynical. jump on the panic shes not ready bandwagon. When the comparisons are done actually Palin as no 2 has as much experience as clinton had in 92

Palin is the number 2. McCain could have gone with a Biden clone. Biden is a man so conservative after his families fall from wealth that he owns less than Cullen. But McCain has something indefinable

McCain is an unreconstructed man of integrity and honour. Has anyone on this site heard of a candidate who would praise his opponent for breaking down barriers on the night of his acceptance. Spending limited campaign funds on putting out an ad like the one where he praises obama and says game on tomorrow.

I dislike Obama for his voting record. He is a charismatic preacher who is pressing all the right "believe" buttons. He has been close to corruption from the start of his path to power. His house was a sweetheart deal. For those of you who do believe, I pity you for the disillusion that will come if he wins. It would be historic

McCain met Palin a while ago and was impressed with her. He made sure she stayed in the race. she got through the vetting. but imho that did not really matter. McCain has always been outside the bullshit. That is why it has taken until this year for him to get the nomination. He is the republicans only chance. I think he sees in Palin the closest to his own views and character. Nothing else mattered. Instead of a clone he went for change. You call it being maverick or cynicism, I call it ensuring change.

I don't need your permission, Sage, but thanks anyway.

jump on the panic shes not ready bandwagon.

Jump on the bandwagon? Points off for cliche, but bitch please... I was initially willing to give Palin the benefit of the doubt, but sorry the more I look at her the less I see. You see, Sage, I take women in public life and the office of the Vice-Presidency extremely seriously. More so than John McCain, I guess.

When the comparisons are done actually Palin as no 2 has as much experience as clinton had in 92

BULLSHIT. In 1992, Bill Clinton had been Governor of Arkansas for a total of thirteen years. Before that he served a two year term as the elected state Attorney General. Al Gore, if you want to make a direct comparison, had served eight years in the Senate and another eight in the House when he was nominated as Vice-President.

Palin, on the other hand, has been Governor of Alaska (the first and only elected state-wide office she's ever held) for less than twenty one months.

I wouldn't elect either Clinton or Gore as county rat-catcher, but Tom Stoppard was right when he had one of his characters say, "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Nobody is entitled to their own facts."

  • Craig Ranapia,

And, Sage, if you really want to do the comparison of who has the experience and judgement to be a heartbeat away from the Oval Office in time of war abroad, and deep economic insecurity at home.

Palin: Less than two years as Governor of Alaska.

Biden: Thirty five years in the Senate -- including over thirty on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (where he is now the ranking Democrat and Chair), and the Judiciary Committee.

Now you don't have to agree with his politics, by any measure, but if McCain wants to make the election about "experience" and "judgement" then he doesn't get to shift the goal posts when his own arguments are no longer convenient.

OK... who wants to bet me that there are going to be a lot of McCain Campaign operatives who are going to leave this travelling freak show off their resumes come November?

I'm also beginning to wonder whether McCain did want Romney or Huckabee after all, and they told him to get lost.

TPM has a handy Palin wrap-up for those who haven't been able to keep up.

McCain's camp is having to finesse its "oh, we knew about Bristol all along" message after the ADN revealed that Palin's own spokesman had no idea. It rather appears that this was a complete surprise to them.

  • JohnAmiria,

Another insight into the woman who would be VP? :

City librarian Mary Ellen Emmons will stay, but Police Chief Irl Stambaugh is on his own, Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin announced Friday. The decision came one day after letters signed by Palin were dropped on Stambaugh's and Emmon's desks, telling them their jobs were over as of Feb. 13, 1997.

The mayor told them she appreciated their service but felt it was time for a change. ''I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla. Therefore I intend to terminate your employment ...'' the letter said.

Palin said Friday she now feels Emmons supports her but does not feel the same about Stambaugh. As to what prompted the change, Palin said she now has Emmons' assurance that she is behind her. She refused to give details about how Stambaugh has not supported her, saying only that ''You know in your heart when someone is supportive of you.''

The three met briefly at Wasilla City Hall Friday afternoon, and Palin called them twice at Stambaugh's home before making the decision.

Palin said she asked Emmons if she would support efforts to merge the library and museum operations. Emmons said she would, according to Palin.

    How does that quote go?
"When they came for the Police Chief I said nothing, when they came for the Librarians I remained silent, when they came for me ..."??

If Peters decides to flee (from the SFO) I'm pretty sure we'll find him in Alaska ...

Let's get all binary for a moment. Either he wanted her, and I simply don't get that on any level, or he wanted someone else. If it's the latter and Rove et al talked him down, then he's not quite the maverick he claims (and if she's their candidate, well...). But I'm inclined to the view that better candidates declined having assessed his chances and this left Palin as the best alternative or at least the only one silly enough to want the honour.

Hell, it's just simple enough to be true. It was like all the stories last week about whether Bill and Hillary Clinton were going to play nice. Who seriously thought they were going to turn themselves in the Ted Heaths of the Democractic Party -- Bill is still the real rock star in that party, and Hillary is still in the Senate and (I'm sure) looking to position herself for a leadership role or a few tasty committee assignments next January.

I don't know if she wants to run again down the line -- hell, I have my doubts she knows. But even being perceived as backstabbing her party's candidate for the Presidency when it is theirs to lose... Come on. She's not that stupid.

And now, from the story that keeps giving, we bring you the "Alaskan Independence Party".

Q: Aren't most Alaskan Independence Party members a bunch of radicals and Kooks?

A: The party has its share of individualists, in the grand Alaskan tradition. No longer a fringe party, the A.I.P. is a viable third party with a serious mission and qualified candidates for elected offices.

    Quite.

So, the impossible had just happened :- McCain's first choice was an even more dubious piece of stunt casting. And I don't think you have to be a wing-nut to ask WTF kind of message McCain thought he was sending about his party, when his pick for veep is still formally caucusing with the opposition?

I'm pretty sure* she's planning to run again, although her perceived age may be a problem ie that old chestnut about men become 'distinguished' as they age and women just look old (and if she doesn't FOX will be over-speculating on 'has she had work done/would you trust a vain President'?)

It occurred to me whilst watching both her and Bill's convention speeches that they'd played her cards brilliantly. There was no point in holding back support on Obama since he was going to get the nomination anyway. As things stand now, if Obama is unsuccessful, no-one can blame the Clintons for his failure. And then her supporters can say "we told you so" and she will run unopposed in 2012.

And if he does become President then she'll just have to wait until 2016 (not so good). Unless u-no-wot happens (highly unlikely).
