New Joanna Newsom album Divers is out - you can if you're interested stream it on NPR here. It's very good.
The Fall at Bodega last Sunday night was an excellent night of curmudgeonlyness - Mark E Smith was in good voice, he only fiddled with everyone else's gear about 5 times, and he even smiled once. Apart from the couple of boofheads in front of me who decided moshing was a good idea (at a Fall concert? Really?), it was the best fun I've had at a concert in ages.

Kurt Vile is also playing Queenstown on Jan 14 and Dunedin on Jan 15. (Bloody JAFAs, always ignoring the South Island, grumble, grumble...).

To be fair, the only Fall concert I went to (at the Fridge in Brixton some 25 years ago) was wall to wall moshpit.

This just in... Pirongia songwriter Leroy Clampitt has a songwriting credit (track 6) on the new Justin Bieber album.

"But the change needed a journal, a Rolling Stone ..."
..and let's not forget there was a brief-lived NZ edition of Rolling Stone back in the '80s.
Edited by Malcolm McSporran.
Had a lot of the NZ Whole Earth writers contributing, Gary Steel, too.Damned if I can find a cover anywhere though...

Parts of it survive on AudioCulture, like this great Roi penned overview of The La De Da's in Dunedin for which I received a lovely email from Kevin Borich only yesterday.

Nice! That guy's quite the dark horse.

Yes, I gave this a nod in the blog at some point. Great to see him doing so well.

The whole video from last night’s Fat Freddy’s live stream will be here until about midnight. Music starts at 11 minutes in.
Amazing show last night – I haven’t always been a fan over the years, but I love their recent dub techno direction but that was a huge concert experience.

The great lost New Zealand synth-pop compilation as compiled by Jon Chapman. It's bloody wonderful.
Plus it includes this MIA classic (from former Techtones bassist Peter Solomon).

Gah. The Captcha on the download won't work for me.

The 'Songs of the City' LATE at the Museum discussion about Auckland's music with me, Simon Grigg, Sir Vere, Dave Dobbyn and Rachel Lang aired yesterday on Radio NZ.
The audio is here.

Try using Chrome instead of Safari; that worked for me.

It's almost embarrassing how many of those tracks I already have in physical formats (mostly on old Jayrem compilation tapes).
I recall "Obscure Desire" was, a little unfairly, derided in RIU at the time as "Hairdressers make music".
"America", OK, but my pick for Shona Laing electronica would have been "Metropolitan Moon" (also off Genre; if ever an album needed a CD or digital rerelease...). -
From the Lucha Lounge gig noted in the post above: Chris Heazlewood doing some howlin' with his current group, Cash Guitar. I liked their set a lot.

RNZ are adding the audio files to the site (not downloadable)
