Another passing this week: Phil(thy Animal) Taylor, the legendary Motorhead drummer, aged 61.
He will always be the master of the double kick drum ...

New Order played the Hillsborough Tavern? eh?

I've got that Golden Harvest 45, but being technologically challenged you'll have to pop along to Golden Dawn on Sunday to hear it. heh.

That's what I thought. But it says they did in Andrew's story.

Funky 16 Corners has a downloadable Toussaint mix here , which I declare to be All Killer, No Filler.
As I was going through Toussaint internet song lists after he died I realised that most of them are heinously incomplete. The albums he did with Betty Harris are filled with songs he arranged, produced and played on and none of them make any appearances, and they all seem to be stone cold classics to me.
(the wacky feedback on this one during the drum breaks! AAAGGGGGHGHHHH so awesome)
I also discovered he wrote THIS, which is such a fave of mine:
Also, LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade"? He produced it. The Meters' "Cissy Strut"? That too. You name anything vaguely close to New Orleans since the 60s and he probably had a hand in it. He was the best. I haven't been so sad at a musician's death in forever.

Ah. Someone was telling me he wrote it, but I looked it up and he hadn't.

From my friend Andrew Boak on FB:
I was stage manager for a "Songwriters Showcase" tour of the US that he was on. He was such a polite southern gent and an amazing piano player....

Ideal little ride over for me, then.

It's going to be fine. Oh, all right, it probably isn't ...

Main street and Vic uni yes.Vic uni show soundcheck was the first time I heard Blue Monday. The final mix had just arrived by courier from the UK and they gave it a hammering over the PA, The performance of it that night was very ordinary, the technology was in its infancy , sequencers kept dropping out. From memory Paul Crowther sorted it out.I'm sure they didn't play ChCh thou.

Hillsborough
Just clarified this with Andrew. The dates were listed in Rip It Up but clearly didn't happen. RIU had 1 & 2 December in the schedule.

Neville Chamberlain - a piece of our time?

Two perspex swirls that have survived against the odds and are enjoying retirement on a suburban piano. Impossible to photograph, still.
Bravo!

Shame, really. It would have been good to be able to say: "That time I saw New Order at the Hillsborough ..."

New Order played Blue Monday on their second Vic Uni show (much better than the first night, featuring a swag of songs from the yet-to-be-released Power, Corruption & Lies LP). The song was so new it was titled 'How does it Feel' on the setlist, which I still have in my proud possession!
While the mix of the new album was playing on the PA after the soundcheck their manager Rob Gretton threatened us (the RadioActive crew) with physical violence if we recorded any of it. Fun times.

A rundown of 50 years of Best Singles.
So good! I'm struck with how hopeful and poppy the winners from about 1992 to 2002 are, before things got more serious in the years after.
