yeah man, bleeding thumbs (always the inside corner at the back of the right hand nail...ouch) digging is a beautiful thing - only equalled by perching in a pub afters to flip through the finds, scour the covers and wonder what they sound like. that's bliss. until you clock on to what you left behind. then, argh.

also, last time I looked there were two euro disco 7s in the groovy bin that had your name all over them.

Middle finger, right hand in my case. The crazy thing was that I hadn't noticed, so I had quite a bit of blood caked into the record grime. I had to go to a bar and have a beer (never mind the IPAs, American wheat beer is great!) and clean up in their bathroom.

If there's ever a shop to leave you bloodied it's the Thing. I failed to mention it to you in my Twitter msg because once you go in there it's hard to get out! A true experience though, not many of those types of shops left.

I did need to escape in the end!
It would have been good to look longer at some of the non-record things there. I did notice that they'd come by someone's collection of very explicit vintage (pre-internet) swinger mags. People had a lot more hair in the old days ...

Great stuff on the Brooklyn digs. I remember P-Money tweeting some great finds when he was working over there a few years. It's on my bucket list!

I have a copy of Their Satanic Majesties Request (bought in Australia in 1968 when my parents took a naive 15 year old for his first trip outside NZ) and I'm pretty sure it's a 3D cover too. I'll have to ask my son to dig it out as he is now keeper of my LP collection.
I always thought it was nice how they returned the favor from the cover of Sergeant Pepper (the Shirley Temple doll with "Welcome The Rolling Stones Good Guys" on its shirt) by putting the Beatles heads in among the flowers.

Oh, that's really sad! And the fact I didn't know before now tells me I'm working too hard.
I just spent fully 5 minutes staring out my window thinking of tons of stuff that all somehow sheets back to Bill.

Really glad you were able to swing by Good, as it is a great shop and they put a lot of work into locating stock (noting Yuseef Lateef’s widow took in copies of her husbands personal records after his passing!). Among other stuff I got a Fatback LP for $1 out of the cheap bins there – nothing wrong with it, and featuring this surehsot:
Buying records OS is one of the joys of travelling, as is visiting the different stores.
I still keep all the records I got in the US 4 years ago grouped together (and do the same for recent Japan acquisitions) rather than mix them in with respective genres as – I guess – it helps keep the memories ‘alive’. Its a bit like leaving price stickers on as a reminder of where something came from.
As for shop experiences, I still recall well being in the now closed AI (June 2012) and they were playing 3rd Bass’s Cactus Album, an old NYC classic. Pretty much everyone in there browsing was rapping along with the lyrics – that sure felt like an NYC experience to me.
I can only think of one thing for you Russell, and others who love record shopping – go to Japan (and purchase excess luggage for the return leg) !

A Spin-Clean isn't that expensive and it makes a huge difference. The first time I played out after getting mine (and cleaning, like, 100 platters in two days) I just kind of stood there thinking how nice they looked and how good they sounded.
