I felt really happy about Ladi 6's win at the awards last night. It made me think of getting her and Parks to play our first Public Address Great Blend event, way back in 2004. The pair of them just sat on stools, with Parks on guitar and backing vocals, while the late sun reached into the Grey Lynn Bowling Club and it was so lovely that I cried a bit. I think that impressed on me all those years ago what a solid musical base those two come from.

Folks you only have one night left to catch Jay Clarkson and the original Breathing Cage at the Wine Bar in Auckland

25 years on Breathing Cage are lined-up to do two gigs at Aucklands Wine Cellar in November with all four original members.

Following up a performance earlier this year at Christchurch's Blue Smoke, the band will perform material from Misericord (the result of winning the somewhat controversial Rheineck Rock Award) along with other Jay Clarkson-penned songs filling out the rest of the set, such classics as The Man With No Desire, Memory Lane and The Boy With the Sad Hands.

Jay Clarkson will also perform a short set of songs solo and singer-songwriter Rex Vizible will open the evening.

Breathing Cage is: Jay Clarkson (The Expendables, Playthings, The Containers) vocals and guitar, Gary Sullivan (Jean Paul Sartre Experience, Solid Gold Hell, Dimmer) on drums, Michael Kime (Expendables, and many Jazz ensembles) on bass, Greg Malcolm (Surfing USSR, The Ivor Cultler Band), guitar, etc.

cheers for that Russell - funniest bit of the exercise is that it's Baker and me who did it; we're hardly disco/ funk heads. But we had a vibe in mind and while I don't expect people will dig everything we've thrown at it, we wanted to highlight the range of the 'scene/ not scene' while maintaining a distinct Nu Zild flavour.
Saying that though, I've found a couple that I had question marks over to be growers. So stick with 'em. Otherwise, by jingo, I've learned a lot.
With a bit of luck though, it'll shake enough tracks out of people's garages and trees for Vol 2. We know there are a lot of tracks recorded for radio promos that could be up for plunder and there's at least one more Mark Williams' (and what a lovely man he is) I'd run with.
Been an interesting week really, launched my first book and a about to crank out a comp. When (and if) the liners get completed (just at proofing stage) they'll almost constitute a second book - all going to plan it'll be an 18-page insert.

They have to be pretty careful what they say and where so not in the immediate, I think.

That Voodoo Lady has turned up previously on a Dalvanius best of CD compilation, and also the Poi-e soundtrack (the long version too). Was on a cool Oz comp last year on double vinyl called Back On The Streets Again, digging thru the Festival vaults. Nice work, Alan P and John B. Look forward to getting it. Vol 2 please

Like a goose I left a copy of the Collision LP behind at a Melbourne record fair a few years ago because I already had a copy in my hands – all the altruism versus hoarding emotions! Haven’t seen one since. Another artist who’s really dried up over here in recent years is Dalvinius – there were 45s and copies of that Voodoo Lady 12 popping up quite often for a while, then pffff, all gone..

And a question for Alan, should he revisit the post, isn’t the Johnny Rocco Band an Oz outfit? Their album had three different covers. I found a corner cut out copy (prism version) in Minneapolis of all places a few years ago, and guess its hoarded as I’ve also the version with the light golden logo cover. An old favourite. As Perter notes, a similar Australian comp from last year included Dalvinius, so there are certainly some musical swings and roundabouts.

yep, they're Aussies, but given that Back On the Streets comp saw fit to include Dalvanius (backed by Collision) we figured it was fair to include a group with a Nu Zild singer.

Finally filed the liners too, so all is go.
