I teared up just READING that account.
Like I did with Let it Be on Morning Report this morning, sentimental old fool that I am.
Epic post today, thanks Russell. Such an important part of Fridays.
I'm about to buy the Tom Scott recording and may tip for Dudley as well.
Looking forward to Music 101 tomorrow which has features on both i believe (also on RNZ tmrw: Kim Hill returns from holiday to tackle Nigel Farage). -
What a post. Thanks man. Miss ya.
Meantime, I sprung for Mr Scott's single a coupla days ago, and have been listening to it almost literally non-stop on my epic attempt to walk every mall and MRT station in Singapore. I think I've bent my head. Sad not to be able to head up and buy merch, but will grab the album off Bandcamp in lieu.

Quite pleased to have the copy of Respect which would have traveled NZ’s airwaves bitd, a NZ pressing too. Released in 67 I think so now 51 years old!
Oh, nice!

It's an odd but fun feeling listening to waiata from home on foreign transit systems. Last time I was in Singapore it was the first L.E.D.s album. New York, the Lontalius album (which was quite good for feeling mysterious and emo on the subway).

Terrific lead, Russell, thanks. As to Miss Franklin, there is also that great New Yorker article from a couple of years ago

her Carole King Kennedy Center Awards performance
and this from her granddaughter:

Speaking of Tom Scotts and Aretha Franklin…
- Stuff’s cartoonist Tom Scott has perplexed me with his ‘tribute’ to Aretha Franklin.
Why has he chosen to use Milton Glaser’s iconic 'psychedelic Bob Dylan hair' as part of his image-making?Sure Glaser did do a portrait of Aretha but it looks completely different to the Dylan image – why introduce the well known graphic shorthand for Bob Dylan into the exercise? – some lame – or lazy – ’60s reference maybe…
or oblique hat tip to John Hammond??
Weird…Stuff also did an article on NZ musicians remembrances of Aretha – yet they call Debbie Harwood – Debbie Haywood! – it took two days to get them to correct it.
Some RESPECT for the living is good too… -

Not a shred of genuine feeling for Aretha or her music in evidence there. Why, ffs? As his John Key-era work demonstrates, Scott never lost his natural-born gift for inspired caricature. Why didn't he employ it in an Aretha tribute? Did he knock something up in a hurry in response to an editorial ask? It's the most generous explanation I can muster for what looks sadly like a senior moment candidate for great Photoshop fails, NZ edition.
Thanks for the Always Running link. A nice cherry on top of one of the richest Friday Music posts yet.

Aretha was not his bag.
