You should be in a shed Giovanni . Real blokes don't go near a garage...
what, no magic carport ride...?

The Bay City Rollers video was great... particularly the woman furiously knitting - let it be said that neither parliament nor the Bay City Rollers will get in the way of a person's knitting.

Clearly someone for whom a conversion to christianity was the lifeline they needed to pull themselves out of a death spiral
An interesting point you raise sir. But it gloss's over so much that is wrong with the way our unintelligently designed society was cobbled together over the centuries, and is in desperate need of an overhaul, and not by the religious, the privileged or the moneyed, and on a global scale. But it won't happen.

Yes, CR. but the Christian Right has been like this about every form of media technology conceivable- from film censorship (1930s -1970s) to video/CD/DVD censorship (1980s- Present) to Internet censorship (1990s- ). Sigman is part of a long trend.
Now now, Mister Young -- I think we both know there's a healthy strain of technophobic in the Left (faith-based and secular). Don't think there's necessarily anything sinister in being properly sceptical about the perils of new technology, but as Russell said there's legitimate concerns and there's sheer craziness.

Is this the stress of wondering where their next dose of "parental correction" is coming from?
Yes I would quite like to see a panel discussion between Bailey and Sigman about the role of shaking in best practice parenting.
-
Well, yes, CR, I do take your point insofar as the Communist Party's anti-comics crusade and eighties antiporn feminism went, and in hindsight, the GM moratorium was based on insufficient extrapolated data about risk or harm. However, as you note, there are some technologies that aren't so benign. Social conservatives of whatever allegiance do tend to get into a moral panic when it comes to media technologies, though.
Incidentally, if Facebook is the spawn of Satan, why is there a Facebook link on the FamFirst website?

Ah, Ari Sigman! I always thought there was something very dodgy about him. Not a researcher nor an advocate, but a zealot you picks 'evidence' (of often highly dubious origins) to reinforce his prejudices. Still, he manages to fool many people--I remember Peter Calder getting quite starry-eyed about him.

There are other media alarmists about--such as John Terris and his Band of Five Followers in the Hutt Valley. They used to send me their newsletter addressed to "The Rev Geoff Lealand". This caused great mirth amongst my colleagues. Delivery stopped when I sent a newsletter back, with a message 'Unsolicited mail from Satan"!

I just have to get this off my chest - I had a major crush on Les McKeown as a 9 year old.... actually got a bit of a lump in my throat just now watching the vid when they panned close up to him giving Ann Margaret the glad eye... spooky

Wait. What?

You're looking for any kind of moral or intellectual consistency in Family First? Good luck to you, but I suspect you're going to trip over the Fountain of Youth in the middle of El Dorado first.

That's a first post on a new page where you have to go back to page 1 to see if you've somehow changed threads or missed a page or something.

Grab some loudspeakers and play back this outside the conference venue... ;D

If the refence was to the thing about literacy and the masses, I'm sure Craig was meant to excoriate Pope Pius IX, the sworn enemy of universal public education.

As long as my life depends on it I. Will. Keep. Clapping.

More like having horrible flashbacks to the suicidal ennui caused by reading Adorno and other sages of The Frankfurt School. Like having your will to live sucked out by psychic lipo.

the Communist Party's anti-comics crusade
In respect of the British campaign, this is well documented in Martin Barker (1984), A Haunt of Fears: The Strange History of the British Comics Campaign (Pluto Press)

remember that 668 is the neighbour of the beast
apropos nothing at all

666
Hehe. I like the story that the inventor of the UPC barcode had a morbid sense of humour and "unintentionally" inserted what appears to be 666 into the barcode. At the beginning, middle and end appear to be 2 narrow stripes. Alludes to be the code for 666.
Thus it is on every item of grocery you spend your Satanised monies on. Woo Woo.

Wait, FamFirst is getting worse. Now they're all aflutter about the bits adangle on TV3 Nightline's coverage (...) of the Nude Blacks...
And CR, yes, I do agree with you about Adorno and the Frankfurt School. Now, could you please tell Gerald Warner, Babs Faithful and the rest of the raving right that the Frankfurt School and post-sixties New Left are two different things...??? -
Judy Baily.
Mother of the Nation.
Mother's message, greed is good.
-
Is there any discussion of this;
Pro-smacking campaigner joins Auckland mayoralty race?Anyway, as Garth McVicar was quoted, and there's more cold salmon* coming from the FoFCon, seemed apposite.
* That is seriously disturbing. And then what? They make them eat it? It seems a high cost for disciplining your children to waste good salmon.

What rubbish. I recorded that segment, re-watched it many times in slow motion and freeze-framed the best angles and you couldn't make out a thing.

You couldn't see the dangling bits because you don't have the obsessive attention to prurient detail of a Family Firster - it's like having Super Vision for cock and such like.
