And, um, sort of goth-ish, I was told that Wellington has the highest per capita sales of Joy Division in the world.

Nothing was more Goth than the Park Royal/Crowne Plaza after 22 Feb 2011.
We came back to be haunted by the ragged curtains blowing out of the windows facing down Victoria St and then the pigeons flying in.
I had visions of Meatloaf living off raw Pigeons.
I was wrong of course, it was the homeless and Demo workers drinking the bars dry prior to demolition. -

I saw the exact same thing on the new cordon-edge late afternoon last Sunday: the old MED/Southpower building on the corner of Manchester and Armagh. No-one was around bar the two of us and the birds flying in and out the broken windows and the curtain rags flapping in an amber autumn light. A Marie Celeste few minutes; as powerful an imprint as the chaos days. The barrier fence was too near the cracked building for my comfort though.

Only this morning the esteemed Kim Deitch happened to post a page from a past meisterwork on that very theme.

Oh bother, that didn’t go at all well never mind envory the not quit one hit wonder played to death on Sunday nights in a nightclub best forgotten.
As for me I wouldn’t part with the Snake for anything I don’t know about growing old as a goth but it certainly never leaves me.

Goth is about the only identifiable clubbing scene in Canberra, still. Beyond 18-year-olds dancing to dire Gaga remixes or "urban" beats.
As well as a regular club night, there is a shop specializing in the clothes and accessories in the middle of town. Ages range from early 20s (at least) thru to late 40s. The "cool"/arty people in Canberra will actually frock up and go to these events for a night out, even if they aren't goth per se.
As well as the queer-friendly, non-macho aspects of the scene, there's a kink-community crossover as well. This is very true in Canberra (the dog collars really AREN'T just a fashion statement, for some).
