Sacha, in reply to
They're already just below in tv projections, but finely poised - would need some combination of John Banks, Peter Dunne and the Maori Party's 3 remaining seats.
-
Whoa - a margin of four votes in Christchurch Central...

Anyone figured how much National has to drop to in order to not be able to govern alone?
They already can't govern alone. As if results held then they would be on 60 seats out of 121. Of course they will be able to govern with Banks and Dunne as well but they will be having a wafer thin majority. And if they were to drop another couple of seats then they would become dependant on the Maori party.
Things are actually much better than I was expecting. I was expecting National to be able to govern outright.
-
Wow, 4 votes!
-
The good thing about being in Christchurch Central is that you really feel your electorate vote counts for something.
-
So am I right in saying its currently National + National.2 + Dunnecula get them 1 seat over majority? 62 seats of a 122 seat Parliament?
Or do they need another seat?
-
Banksie for speaker? :-)
It has almost become a tradition for the Greens to pick up an additional seat from the specials - at whose expense will be interesting.
-
bmk, in reply to
At the moment you are right.
But National could easily drop another seat and then they would be looking to another party.
-
Richard Grevers, in reply to
Or do they need another seat?
They lose one vote by providing a speaker but that would leave them 61-60. I gather that your first electorate seat is never an overhang one, so if Maori Party stays below 1.4% there will be two overhang seats?
-
Does the Back Benches show have a live stream in progress? I cannot find a link if so
-
Gareth Ward, in reply to
You lose a vote from Speaker huh? (Makes sense just never considered it). Then yes they need the Maori Party and given the serve they've been given by their electorate that might be an interesting discussion over the next couple of days. Not in a way that National won't form Government but outcomes might be interesting.

Waitakere slipped away :-(. Over 5 mins it went from 92 to Sepuloni to over 900 for Bennett.
-
What's the overall turnout for 2011? Up from 2008?
-
bmk, in reply to
You do lose a set for speaker but they still currently have enough 60 + Banks + Dunne = 62 - speaker = 61. With 121 MPs that means they have a one vote majority without the Maori party.
-
Oh sorry I thought there was a 2 seat overhang, thought MP only had enough for 1 one on the party vote...

I voted at South Wellington Intermediate. A team of Marching 'Girls' (I'm not sure if you can be a 'girl' still in your 20s-30s -25 was my cut-off point but I think that might still be the technical term). practising hard on the netball courts as we walked up.
The booth this year was in the school library rather than the hall- the extremely pleasant and patient booth manager told me this was because Welly City Council has found that the school hall building was found too earthquake-prone and they weren't allowed to use it (although the marching team had for a Housie fundraiser last night). The 2nd school in Newtown to have this verdict lately (kids at the primary are either in their hall or being bussed to Wgtn High). One for Anne T and Gerry B to sort?
It was a nice opportunity to connect with the neighbourhood, regardless of the outcome.

With a lot of luck Brendon “Landslide” Burns just might save his pale pink seat from the jaws of defeat.
(That's Gerry in Burns’s electorate today, en famille).Thank u Gudrun Gisela for the pic.

bmk,
Chch Central - tied before specials. Special voters in Chch must be feeling powerful about now.
-
Christchurch Central is tied at 100% of the vote counted. This is bad for my nerves!
-
Filthy assistants hand me my bowel disruptor because someone is just full of shit.
David Parker is “bloody proud of Phil Goff” and adds that, “People haven’t yet come home to Labour. They will eventually.”

Act are a bunch of dead cats that don't bounce, their dead rotting corpse has been rolled into the house as a theatrical prop; add to that their member is a zombie mad man who has eaten his own brain.
Just priceless watching Banks give a speech - he is barking.
Hilarious
-
What has gone on in the Chch seats, defies logic that some very strong local members seem to have been punished by the voters who stayed put
Interesting to see what the specials do -

Stuff wasn't prepared for the possibility of a tie - their results system shows Wagner the winner with a majority of 0
