    "I'm flumoxed on Ian Wishart. He went to Onslow College at the same time as me. We were at an incredibly liberal secondary school."

    When writing a history of Onslow College for its 50th birthday in 2006, I asked several former students for memories of the school. Ian Wishart kindly and promptly provided a couple of paragraphs in which he looked back favourably on his time at the school, 'It certainly helped me (which I'm sure some now regret) become a self-starter'.

    If you would like a copy of the history I still have a few copies. It is full of school memories from a cross section of NZ's interesting and influential, including several MPs, such as Trevor Mallard who recalled unjust physical punishment meted out by the art teacher.

    Also featured is former secondary school activist, the new Green MP Catherine Delahunty.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

    You ever given up smoking?

    If that's for me, yes, I woke up once, and was told I hadn't had a cigarette for 5 weeks, actually hadn't done much at all, (I'll blame the doctors) so thought it rather stupid to resume. Now it's been 5 years. I so happy! :)

    Craig:Do you think that Nats would rush forward and offer a helping hand if it was Labour who had to face the economic onslaught?

    60 Minutes.... Australians are moving here! Shit are the TV channels working for National?

    I don't know -- I'm still trying to figure out why the Campbell Live piece on Simon Bridges had these random extreme close up pans across his right eyebrow. Someone go on the razzle with a company credit card?

  • Kracklite,

    Incidentally, how many commentator have already invoked Night of the Living Dead when talking about Douglas? Seems like that's a meme that will stick

    OK, fodder for the cartoonists:

    Key=Kane
    ACT=facehugger
    Douglas=chestburster
    English=Ash

    Where's Ripley?

    To be honest, I remember Trace Hodgson doing a Douglas-as-chestburster cartoon during the Lange government.

    Machiavelli once wrote, "Your greatest strength is your greatest weakness". It could be that Key's greatest weakness will be his strength. By that I mean that his very lack of apparent belief in anything will mean that he will be more interested in power than ideology - and that therefore extreme ideology that would alienate (pun intended) the electorate and limit his government to one term is precisely what he'll do his best to avoid. Holding ACT at arm's length and attempting at least to open a dialogue with the Maori Party would seem to indicate this... not to mention that that may just tease Te Borg (self-mockery of simplified characterisation intended also) away from Labour, making National a centrist and 'natural party of government' in the long term. It may be also that National itself has misjudged him and that the smiling assassin will start cutting their dead wood...

    My, I've just got my pony and it's delicious.

    Isn't wishful thinking fun?

    Isn't wishful thinking fun?

    The particular wishful thought I've been ruminating is that, asinine as his speech the other night was, Key just seemed so happy. A Tory Prime Minister who at heart just wants to be loved may do considerable less damage than one who wants to do the right thing by his ideology to get the country through a rough patch.

    Then again, I wasn't in the country back then but the accounts I read suggest that Lange also wanted to be loved.

    Fuck me, I just ran over my pony.

    God, I love that expression. I was just talking to my lovely friend in Wgtn - very liberal, Jewish National voter - and I think my pony may have just bought it too.

  • Sam F,

    I think the principle is this: if you're wishing for something very desirable and particularly unlikely, why not wish for a pony as well whilst you're at it?

    Case in point, a few threads ago Kyle wished that someone would start an inquiry based for once entirely on non-partisan desire to protect our democracy. It wouldn't have done him any harm to have wished that everyone get a pony too.

    Running over a pony presumably means that once wishful thinking has landed you in a mental happy place where you can almost sense your longed-for pony, some element of reality intervenes, and the result is several dozen boxes of Pedigree dogroll...
