Is the book Fiscadoro? We call it rich peoples TV, weird, and habit it is with me yes. I do like the show "House" though and Boston Legal really has it's moments, so there are good shows, but there are so many other things to do, like read impossible books.

I feel sorry for the sailors too, since they can normally pass the time with a sing-song: "The Captain's wife was Mabel, ..."

The bit that gets my ire up is the alleged 'newsbreaks' where they deliberately don't tell you the news to bait you into watching the main show later on. That's not a newsbreak, its a bloody ad break.

the daniel i referred to earlier in the piece did a study of the transition from 1/2 hour to 1 hour news.
he found that actual content had decreased, but chat (the fronts talking shit to one another) had increased, as had ads.
so... more "news" but less, well, news.

Interesting how quickly the VT shooters status as an immigrant has been pushed to the front of the news stories. Never mind that he's lived in the US since he was about 8 (1992, I think the Herald says). I guess it's the need to "other-fy" someone who could do something like this, and shift them away from being a "normal" American.

Yup - the TV bulletins yesterday were initially reporting he was a Chinese student from Beijing!! Turns out he's South Korean!
Australia's Today Show (broadcast mornings on Prime) yesterday crossed live to an Aussie student attending Virginia Tech. According to her she got an email in the morning say there had been a shooting and that classes were cancelled. And yet the news reports were carrying the story that 'the school authorities' were being criticised for allowing classes to continue. Hmmm, I wonder if Today checked their source before putting her to air?
