  • Lilith __, in reply to Heather Gaye,

What is this "digital" you speak of?

It means that you have to operate the book with your fingers.

A single malt is a single malt BUT - you can blend single malts- this would be something for a hugely experienced cellar-master with an exceptional nose to do- and could be done with the hoard in Oamaru-

Quite. There are a handful of very good blends done by the high-end private bottlers from whatever's to hand. The Adelphi Private Stock blend is $45-50 and it's lovely.

I think making your blends all from the same distillery isn't going to be quite as good though. It helps to have a broad palette to choose from.

Does anyone know if the Oamaru whisky is in big, middling or small barrels? Choosing a special bottling would be fun.

  • Islander, in reply to Russell Brown,

    Full-size barrels Russell – there’s quite a few (+100), mainly of Lammerlaw-
I can find out exact numbers of what & quantities thereof, but it'll take a day or two.
Aside from anything else, there is some legal uncertainty about the ownership of the whole stash, ever since the lease on the building went kaput-

Here is a link to the NZ Whisky site, if you look at the bottom of the page you will see a photo of some of the barrels, or check out this page from someone's Flickr account

  • Islander, in reply to Ben Austin,

Many thanks Ben! Havent been inside the uptairs floor for about 6 months…well-lit photos, those-

Milford was the name they were selling it under (I have two of the wee flasks they sold in Oamaru) but, for all intents & purposes, it's basically mature Lammerlaw.

  • Ben Austin,

No problem Islander. I visited a couple of times when back in NZ, before the original company had its issues and it certainly seemed like a nice operation, so I was sad to hear that it all fell over.

It is good to hear that someone has picked it up again, although it looks like there is still uncertainty about its future in Oamaru

Yep – I was looking for that clipping among my ODT files*- again, thank you for ressurrecting it.

There are problems with the leases in some of the heritage buildings but it really would be a sadness if that rich hoard of irreplaceable single malt was flogged off overseas…

*My ODT files are majorly in Oamaru! But I thought I’d copied a lot of the essential ones to my computer here…not so, it seems.

  • nzlemming, in reply to Islander,

Well, you can, but then it is no longer a single malt – it is a blend, by definition.

PS The Lammerlaw is fucking awesome! I could never understand how the people responsible for that could also produce the execrable Wilsons standard blend. And 45 South? Let's just not go there.

  • Islander, in reply to nzlemming,

Heh – I was just sipping the last drops of that Lammerlaw flask I mentioned & thought, Must go see what the thread is saying…

of course, you are right – but it is a blend of single malts which is – um, single malts cozying up together to produce something even more revelatory & heartening?

I used to keep a bottle of 45 South (evilly bourbonish stuff it was too) especially for people who liked Coke or lemonade with their ‘whisky.’ I was kind of glad when it went extinct.

Well, I'm glad there's something we can agree on ;-)

I remember buying a bottle of Lammerlaw for my dad, a confirmed Glenfiddich drinker. He looked askance at it, being an NZ label, but I was able to persuade him to try it. I'll never forget his eyes going wide. It's quite possible that that was the first day he truly saw me as an adult.

And mine. Until I'm discovered by millions of eager rich little kids or I win Lotto. I've put a pittance into the fund. Embarrassing, but every little helps, n'est-ce pas?

Just alluding to the single malts that go to make up a Great Blend.
Not promising to be totally drunk on arrival but who knows?

And I would be interested in a PA blended whisky as I have faith in the erudition of the members and expect a superior product (greater than the sum of its parts).

  • recordari,

Hey Russell, I just got a “Donation Accepted” email from PayPal (via your account), so I hope this means you’re getting “paid in full”, so to speak? Was a bit concerned when you mentioned they were messing you around, as had heard other similar stories.

I was going to post this up tomorrow when my pay cycle aligns and I make my contribution, but since you mentioned it...

Ha, I initially played it myself, but thought in that context looked a bit odd, so settled for the reference.

    Thank you!

It looks like I'll be able to give CactusLab $5000+, which is just bloody fantastic.

There has also been some new advertiser interest, ditto.

And while I said that it would all go into site development, I wish to propose an amendment to the effect that a small portion will also be used to buy a nice lunch for Emma and David and their families when I'm down in Christchurch on the 22nd, as a token of everyone's appreciation.

    Those in favour say aye.

    Those against?

    Motion carried.

    Aye aye, cap'n.

That's bloody awesome news on the fund raising front too. I've always been happy to support editorial integrity through subscriptions, especially if it reduces the dependence on fickle advertising dollars. I recommend you make a habit of it.

    Nun too soon.

Interesting concept. Could be good, but will require some widespread buy-in to be truly fruitful.
