  • Yamis,

It's just never going to work though. From a logistical point of view it would be a diabolical nightmare. It's not an aircraft seating a few hundred with one point of entry. It's a stadium with half a dozen points of entry and if it's a big game with a large walk up crowd (as there would be in this case) you'd have tens of thousands to deal with. It would cost more to 'police' than any extra money you might make not to mention the aggravation of those who lose their seats and lost money from lower prices.

The occasions in NZ when a sporting event is 'soldout' are as rare as hens teeth these days. If Eden Park wasn't a construction site this wouldn't have happened, and the only other regular soldout games are AB tests (though not these days), and there are usually piss all empty seats there.

If people want to go watch the Blues at the moment they need to buy a ticket during the week it looks like. They can always go slide into some of those vacant season ticket seats during the game anyway ;)

Clearly there would never be tens of thousands of empty seats to fill, you'd only do it on full house games, and it would only be a few hundred tickets. And last time I went to a stadium the ticketing was controlled by bar codes and computers. At a certain time just push a button and it can print off one-off tickets for all the empty seats (or maybe, 90% of them). They already have dozens of staff working to sell the main tickets, this is five minutes extra work for them.

  • Naly D,

Hmmmmm... the WRFU loses $500,000 and the HBRFU makes a (modest) profit of $18,0000. Who are geniuses here again? Where should the NZRFU be looking for coaches and ideas for how to save professional rugby in the lower North Island again?
Jesus, Wellington and the Hissycanes can't even compete with a D grade soccer team playing in a boring no-name Australian competition.

I'd be careful making those two comparisons. For one, HB has only recently become competitive and has a number of big-name players just come through the ranks.

As to the 'Nix comparison, fair enough, but that was two post-season games. If the 'Canes could make it to a home semi and final, it'd be interesting to see what they attracted.

And what about the people who come along late/at half time? Or complimentary ticket holders?

I think I've already answered that. A condition of the tickets is that you turn up by a certain time or you may miss out.
