I don;t understand why they didn't keep the original version. The original is lame and the feelers will obviously make it lamer...
-
Because The Feelers are a bit shit, radio-friendly nothing-rock. But isn't that why they got the gig?
If that's so, when maybe we should ask why the organisers were looking for a bland, middle-of-the-road band playing a bland, middle-of-the-road song.
The Feelers and "Right Here, Right Now" both have their merits, but putting them together is like serving a meal of mashed potatoes with mashed kumara. Where is the meat? Where is the sauce?
That song has moved from being a pop song that captured the poltical zeitgeist of the early '80s, to being a one-size-fits-all corporate launch/political rally song for hire.
It's a song for people who don't like music. Maybe the NZRU doesn't want anything to overshadow the rugby.

Fair play, there is altogether too much negativity surrounding the RWC, but The Feelers... The fucking Feelers? A bland band covering a bland song? They might as well have had Autozamm.
Here's what a sport song could and should be:
-
Because of the size of the broadcast audience and the number of repetitions, I'd say the composer is in for a six figure royalty payment. Regardless of who performs or what the choice of song says about us to the world, wouldn't you rather that money went to a New Zealander?
-
Christ, I vaguely remember the finns song you put in there. Gee that was awful, I wonder if the Feelers will be any worse.
What was the song for the 1990 commonwealth games (I seem to remember there was on)? I remember it was pretty bad but worked out OK in terms of people singing it.

Ah, the memories... and weirdly enough, twenty years later the foil balloon that five-year-old me was waving around is still intact...
-
I've got a bad feelering about this...
Judging by the song's track record of being used
in the past by big time losers (Hilary Clinton,
Jerry Brown as noted on the other thread) this
will be an unnecessary albatrossity!
doooomed, doooomed we're dooomed.... -
Sadly the song for a Clinton winner -- in 1992 anyway -- was Fleetwood Mac's Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.
Maybe we should have got the Feelers to cover this ...
-
an unnecessary albatrossity!
Oooh, Oooh, I get that one...
I think.
;-) -
The article on Stuff was pretty lame, I thought. Their big scoop: THREE people on Twitter didn't like it! And at least two of those three people weren't even rugby fans!
-
Ta Mr M - great to see that old Fall clip again...
but I'm thinking the Tall Dwarfs Nothing's
Going to Happen might be more apt... -
3410,

Heh. So true.

Ah the Fall. Never seen that vid before, so thanks Phillip. I couldn't quite see which stadium it is, but it says "made in Burnley" at the end which suggests Turf Moor. Was crowd trouble there on the weekend too - things perhaps haven't changed so much since when Mark E Smith penned this little anthem and the accompanying video.
-
Dishonourable mention: the 1974 Commonwealth Games theme song, "Join Together".
-
But the really big question is who will perform the obligatory version of "World in Union".
Our Kiri and Our Hayley have already had their turn for other countries. Maybe Hollie Smith and Gin Wigmore could do a sexy version, with a video involving cupcakes.

The Feelers are the possibly the shittiest band ever. As a friend of mine said, "fucking worst fucking choice ever, even fucking True Bliss would have been better."
And to make it worse this bunch of wannabe nancy boys are not even singing a New Zealand song.
You want inspired rather than insipid bullshit for paunchy men to feel younger to? Pink doing the V8 Supercars - that is inspired.
Why not Ladyhawke belting out something ballsy???
-
I would suggest that most rugby folk who are looking forward to the RWC in NZ either don't know the Feelers or don't give a stuff.
If the WC is even 0.002% about the song I'll be surprised. What is the theme song for the football WC in SA this year? Who knows, who cares, move along.

Any reason why you would say that beyond a thoughtless and rather cheap cynicism?
As far as I can recall, that theme tune perfectly caught the pitch of the times and an event that is widely regardly as being just about the halycon peak of the Commonwealth games.

RWC is so large it's akin to bland breakfast shows on commercial radio and tv - middling prejudices gently confirmed, music strictly for nostalgia and skillfully tuned to the preferences of the middle-aged chaps who think Shania Twain is racy stuff.
Te Feelers exemplify that, and I know it has to play all over the world - but you'd think they'd perhaps get to sing a more distinctly NZ song if the main reason for our government injecting several hundred million dollars is branding us as a destination. Geez I'd even settle for something by those Aussies, Crowded House.
Instead we represent ourselves with music written to commemorate an event in Europe in 1989 and used for all manner of innocuous and unrelated events since. Amerika lite. Ambitious much?

You all realise, of course, that this whole song thing is but a smokescreen to hide today's announcement of ticket pricing?
A 'category A' pack for five games at Eden Park will cost $1,720 plus a $15 handling fee. The equivalent package for games in Christchurch will cost $740.
After the National Gubmint has coughed up $99 squillion of "Our Hard Earned Money"® we will have to sit at home shivering as we hunt for a job and worry about feeding the kids. While we watch hoards of marauding foreign Rugby fans queue relentlessly for trains and buses, fumbling through their pockets for loose change.
When their teams have been mercilessly thrashed by "Our" Almighty All Blacks® they will slink back to their humble backpackers lodge and wait patiently for their plane home. They will not be visiting the local pubs or restaurants or even paying inflated prices for Lion Red® whilst they huddle in the damp wind that howls up the harbour at "Party Central"®. They will depart penniless, penniless as the Bar and Café owners.
The winner on the day, of course, will be Rugby® -

Well, I only do thoughtful cynicism, though I'm always looking for a bargain.
Here is a poem I wrote for my 3rd form English class. I'm sorry it doesn't scan properly, and that the rhymes are often clunky and it doesn't have much lyrical grace.
My biggest regret is not mentioning "yellow" people along with "black" and "white". Sorry, yellows!!!!

JOIN TOGETHER
We've got to join together.
Let our laughter fill the air.
It's time for every race and creed
to throw away their every care.Let sport unite us all as one
in the spirit of the Lord above.
And let us all remember
the Games are for the fostering of peace and love.Once in every four years
the Commonwealth becomes
a unit to which everyone
from anywhere belongs. They gather in the place it's named.
This time it's in Christchurch.
And getting on together.
Play sport with a feeling that should surround the earth. Here in our country
the Games will now be held.
And people, black and white, will come
from all parts of the world. And for the time that they are here
we'll get to know them well.
And hope that in the future
our relationships will tell. -

And the fact that the song isn't a rumour! I just saw it on TV and... meh, it's an ad with-none-too-memorable-but-far-from-the-worst-I've-ever-heard rock. And of course it's just the slogan " right here, right now (no other place I'd wanna be) " that they want.

This is my main gripe as well. While The Feelers are bland, I can understand the NZRU chosing someone innocuous like them. But to deny the opportunity for an NZ songwriter to makecsome dosh is bad planning.
