  • BenWilson,

    >“Any pedantness on this chapter would be great”
    >Where to start...

    Well, that's obvious.

    Yes, "Pedantress" surely.

  • giovanni tiso,

So interesting, in fact, that I think I'll write a book abou...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZ

No, no, it *is* interesting hear me out. True, it may be illegal to bodycheck a goalie in ice hockey, but they get regularly crashed into and must be super tough. That women should (if only formally) be allowed to fill that role is noteworthy, given the overall politics of gender segregation in sports.

  • Steve Barnes,

Other lands have their vitality in a few, a class, but we have it in the bulk of our people.

Whitman wrote that 48 years before brothers Dick and Mac McDonald opened a restaurant in San Bernardino, California.
    How could he have known?.
    ;-)

  • Steve Barnes,

    True Gio.
But, and it is a big butt. Gender is not just about size.
Not all men are tough, not all women are frail.
I can think of plenty of women I would not pick a fight with.
Not that I'm the fight picking type.
Try saying that with a mouth full of cookies.

  • BenWilson,

I wonder if it's also because female goalies might be in the same league as men. Goalie is a position much more about skill than raw power.

I say this as a waterpolo goalie of 15 years. The top female goalies were far, far closer to the men in ability than other positions. The goalie does not need to match the men in speed or stamina, nor is physical domination of them such a factor. The goalie tends not to be manhandled (OK, poor choice of words, but it kind of makes the point).

Obviously strength and size is a factor too, but female goalies made up for raw power with their lighter frames that could move more rapidly, and they could hold their upper bodies out of the water longer, a core goalie skill in polo.

I don't know how much of that generalizes to hockey goalies...the factors relating to water don't, but perhaps a light frame is highly advantageous. Certainly the ability to read the shooters is likely to be equivalent between men and women, and in my experience is the core skill of a goalie.

It used to make me laugh when we played shootout competitions at the end of club training, where everyone lines up, and if you miss the shot you have to go in the goal, and if you get scored on 3 times you are out. Usually the last 2 would be me and the female goalie, and we'd have to call it a draw or pay for extra pool time.

  • Hadyn Green,

Argentina have qualified. Forty million people now having group sex. Diego Maradona somewhere underneath them.

Gosh! Is that what we're supposed to do if New Zealand qualify? I must remember that if I'm at the game

Actually tell a lie, that information has dated:

One woman, Manon Rhéaume, appeared as a goaltender for the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning in preseason games against the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins, and in 2003 Hayley Wickenheiser played with the Kirkkonummi Salamat in the Finnish men's Suomi-sarja league.

Manon was pulled early in both her games, the coach admitted putting her on the ice was a publicity stunt to raise the profile of the Lightning, which was an expansion team.

Hayley Wickenheiser is the real deal. She played senior womens hockey at the age of 15, picking up gold at the world champs for Canada. She participated in Philadelphia Flyers rookie camps in the late 1990s, but didn't make the team (NHL has different rules). She currently plays pro hockey in Europe. She also represented Canada in softball at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

  • simon g,

    Maradona speaks:

"They [journalists] treat me like dirt, but we qualified with honour. I dedicate this to all of the Argentinian people and my family, but one sector does not deserve it, because they treated me like garbage."

Now that's a post-match interview. Beats the heck out of "full credit ... got plenty to work on ... thanks to sponsors".

Watch for Argentina selecting a reasonably sane group and winning the cup on the back of Maradona telling Messi and co. to do whatever the hell they want.

"Thanks to my players, today I was consecrated as a coach," he said defiantly, during post-match remarks laced with profanities. (AP)

  • Tom Semmens,

    27-20
    We were robbed!

Were we what! They needed ten All Blacks, a forward pass that led to McCaw's try and a blind touch judge to sneak past us. I hear the good Lord himself expressed his displeasure with an earthquake shortly after the game.

The crowd was fantastic as well! Real rugby, and I can't get enough of it.

I predict the NZRFU is going to get a helluva shock come February. I note their crowds in Cunterbury are down over 30% on last year, on top of a million dollar loss - a trend repeated across all the Super Unions.

These super unions are the same ones who have railroaded the change in the ANZC from 14 to 10 teams, and these same five unions clearly - if their on field performances are to be any guide - see the ANZC as an annoying diversion that simply threatens their entrenched status.

These same five unions will contribute half the teams to the new ANZC next year.

On the other hand, the ANZC has been a roaring success everywhere else this year with crowds and TV audiences up a giddying 50% and general agreement that the competition has captured the public imagination and the standard is well up on previous years - with, once again, the exception of the Super unions where crowds are DOWN on last year.

In the Super unions the audience is clearly over-exposed to to much rugby and has switched off.

So here is my hoped for 2010 outcome for the NZRFU:

Come February no one turns up for Super games. The Super unions play in half empty, half built stadiums and no one is much interested until well towards the finals. I think that the public's interest in the ANZC vis-a-vis the Super 14 shows the punters are voting with their feet, so this is a distinct possibility, and the NZRFU won't be able to say they weren't warned because the 2009 Super 14 was poorly atttended.

Then, come ANZC time the vibrancy of this year falls flat as the five Super unions - i.e. at least half the games in any one round - are played in empty super-union stadiums with no atmosphere.

In other words, BOTH of their competitions could end up being fucked in 2010 as a result of their own stupidity.

  • Tim Hannah,

It will be interesting to see what kind of crowd they pull for the soccer - if it is actually a sellout. I would predict 'not quite' - maybe 30,000 - and certainly not the need for that extra seating they can put in.

They will probably have to let people into both halves of the stadium :)

'Allocation exhausted'. Which may not mean sold out depending on what allocation means. But certainly suggests they could easily sell out given there's almost a month to go. And perhaps will consider the extra seating if they haven't already.
