Field Theory: Great game of netball or greatest game of netball?

  • Megan Wegan,

Netball world champs, 2003. Temepara George getting sent off with minutes to go. I'm pretty sure that game went to the two-goal overtime thing, too.

Last night's game was better, but that game would be a close second.

And Irene missing that goal? Total flashbacks to Donna Loffhagen.

And last, not to be all typically kiwi, but those really were some awful umpires.

  • Charles Mabbett,

Hi Hadyn, maybe the greatest game of netball ever - gold medal match, scores tied, extra time, seesawing fortunes, big crowd. But i think 'netball' without the hashtag gave a better and more interesting twitter feed of the match.

  • Richard Llewellyn,

I couldn't sit, for fear my complacency would lose the Ferns the game.

Lol - thats exactly how I feel during tense sporting events. And afterwards, I can't help but feel sorry for the vanquished (well, just a little bit sorry in the case of the uber-competitive McMahon)

  • Richard Irvine,

I'm not really a netball fan - but I usually watch the 'Us v The Aussies in really big finals' as they roll around. I like to think of it as The World's Most Dramatic TV Show Ever, that's so intense they can only show it every two years.

For me, the best game of anything ever is England v Germany 1990. The tears! The tragedy! The Pavarotti!

The greatest extra time, though, was Man U v Bayern. That was... a *fuck* of a thing.

  • Jed Soane,

I forgot about the game and went to bed early but damn, it was almost as exciting "watching" the game via my Twitter feed this morning. John Campbell needs to become a commentator. I wonder if he would consider guest commentating the Pirate City vs Richter City roller derby bout?

  • Richard Irvine,

I actually struggle tweeting during a game, it takes away from the swearing and pacing up and down. Rugby's OK, cos you can crack a zinger through the covers while they're lining up a conversion, and in cricket, you need to tweet to stay awake half the time, but netball...

Campbell's was a super effort from that regard, he must have the Usain Bolt fingers / brain.

  • Joshua Arbury,

    Agreed, what a crazy game.

I spent all of exrra time hiding in bedroom under blanket demanding score updates every 30 seconds from my girlfriend.

When we got the final goal... well I'm surprised more people haven't commented: "what was that strange roar we heard from the direction of Herne Bay at 10.50 last night?"

Unbelievable. I still remember the tragedy of '99, this finally made up for that.

People were too caught up to be bothering with any of that hashtaggery. And the flurry of CAPITALS..

  • Jacqui Dunn,

Hooray! Someone else - it looks like quite a few actually - who feels that watching NZ play anybody will ruin the team's chances!

I stopped watching the Black Caps years ago for that very reason. Just couldn't stand the guilt.

    And the flurry of CAPITALS..

I heard a little voice from my keyboard say "oh yeah it's CAPSLOCK's time to shine!"

Oh, I completely feel like that.

"oh yeah it's CAPSLOCK's time to shine!"

I think my favourite tweet was:

HOW WAS THAT NOT #$%^ING REPLAYED BALL?

Yeah, at one point I found myself thinking, please somebody, call a time out... My partner said, "I should just be tweeting what you're saying," and when I looked at him blankly, repeated something I'd just said about Anna Scarlett in such a way that I had to punch him in the thigh.

  • Geoff Lealand,

It was a tremendous game but a little strange. My beloved declared we have lost when Australia went two up, so I went and hide in the bathroom, as I did during the last RWC (oh, the horror..... ) I emerged, to be told that we had won!

It was certainly a much better experience than the Waikato vs Manawatu game earlier in the evening--Waikato were listless and only saved, once again, by Stephen Donald (scoring 22/26 points) . He really must return to the ABs.

Fuck roller derby and fuck the increasing Americanisation of New Zealand sport. When are you guys going to get over your obsession with tattooed chicks on roller skates wearing lingerie as outerwear? We've just seen 8000 athletes from 71 countries competing in 260 events. That's a shitload of uniforms you could have been writing about, Hadyn...

Chicks playing an actual, serious, physical, hard out, athletic and skilled sport, for what it's worth.

Dismiss it all you like, but at least have the decency to acknowledge that.

  • Sam F,

Yes, clearly it was down to Hadyn to write about the Commonwealth Games, because I can't remember seeing any other coverage in the media lately?

  • giovanni tiso,

Oh, and by the way, enough with this personalisation and creativity in what you wear on the court/rink/pitch. It's not sport if the players aren't all wearing the exact same outfit provided by a recognised sports equipment manufacturer. Won't somebody please think of the sponsors?

  • Geoff Lealand,

So, did American invent roller skates? And lingerie?

  • Hadyn Green,

"...the increasing Americanisation of New Zealand sport"

I think Americanisation should be spelled with a z. And technically we are New Zealandising Roller Derby (Aotearoafication?).

  • Richard Irvine,

For the record, I've never not watched the game 'cos of tense-ness. One person miles from where the action is taking place wimpering in the corner isn't going to affect the outcome. This isn't my place of work.

Ahh yes the old Donald trick of hitting brilliant form in NPC and Super rugby and then completely melting down at international level...

Hell of a game. They so nearly threw it away in the fourth quarter.
