  • Naly D,

I really like the English rugby league uniform and the 83-87 Cavs uniform

As to the shitty revisions of uniforms [like the Man U back stripe, ugh. Not to mention the gold uniform from 2001 that almost singlehandedly ruined football for me - the one which did was the green alternate strip from somewhere around 1998-2001 but I can't find that online] it's purely money. HEY WE MADE A NEW JERSEY BUY IT SO YOU DON'T LOOK LIKE YOU DON'T ACTUALLY LIKE THE TEAM WHEN YOU COME TO OUR GAMES!

Which is why in NZ we're lucky that adidas only renews shirts every second year.

Having said that though, merchandise counts for a lot of a team's income.

Having a perusal of that site, One would hope random drug testing isn't rigorously enforced for this lot.

Mind you, I just ordered the shirt.

You mean the one with no chevrons? (hence not a League jersey at all) And the weird shoulder panels? And the Russian Orthodox Cross at the waist?

I suppose the socks are nice

I was always told that the use of the V's in league was originated in Australia [so not where the game started] in 1929, 34 years after Northern Union began, and that to this day it is a mainly SH deal? Though in 2007 the Great Britain side used V's in its final season

I'm deliberately not calling them chevrons because I didn't know that was the technical term. You shoulda linked to uniwatch's design competition in this post!

  • Edward Siddle,

I always thought this was one of the most ridiculous rugby uniforms I have ever seen. Especially when Olo Brown was wearing it. He always looked vaguely sheepish when playing in it.

What about the jersey of the team that was possibly the most exciting in NZ for a 9-10 year old

    Naly
Ah, the Vikings. Saw them lose a dismal semi-final in the rain in Rotorua in 1997. Best thing about the game was the huge volcano they had in one corner of the ground, that periodically went off with BOP did something good.

The Vikings jersey may well be worse than the Auckland one, but then I guess I'm a bit more forgiving of jerseys for such artifically created teams. It is when you've got an absolute classic like the historic Auckland jersey - which of course follows exactly Hayden's general classification of types (horizontal stripes for rugby) - and then ruin it for no good reason, that I think the worst uniform crimes are committed. The same pretty much applies to some of the recent Canterbury jerseys too.

One uniform that I find quite jarring this year is the Man United home strip with its rugby league V. I mean, I find everything about them jarring, but that outfit. Just a bit odd.

  • Peter Darlington,

The Hammers jersey was best from about 1965-72, the Bobby Moore era. Sheer classic. The Dagenham Motors and Dr Martens late '90s jobs weren't too bad either. In 2009/10 there is not enough blue in the claret and blue and that's why we can't win a game.

    Oh, hang on a minute...

What interests me is how sports uniforms relate to contemporary fashions. Do shirt collars reflect whatever is hot in menswear at the time?

And in a country like New Zealand where we wear quite a lot of black, does the donning of a colourful sports uniform* allow the Kiwi bloke to put on a colourful shirt without feeling... weird.

    * Except most national teams, of course.

how the memory plays tricks eh? i looked it up and the Vikings actually won the semi final against the bay that I thought they lost. maybe it was the jerseys - so horrendous I just thought they were losers even when they weren't.

My ex-brother in law is sitting on a box full of Viking's jerseys he purchased when they went belly up, unloved and unlamented.

He swears that they'll eventually be the hottest NZ Rugby jersey collectable.

I'll buy one, if he wants to offload one to me now. It will go well with my Auckland Knights t-shirt and teal-era BLACKCAPS shirt. [I'm serious]

One of my favourite childhood memories was having Norm Hewitt sign my favourite Spiderman cap after a Vikings win in Palmerston North. This was just after his whole violent drunken rampage, but I had no idea what that was all about at that age. I 'won' a Vikings poster off 2XS just after they started and I had it on the bed above my roof. Not even Man U ever had that pride of place. I loved that team, and when they folded [again I had no idea what that was all about at that age] I stopped following sport, except Man U.

Ahhh, memories. Christian Cullen really was a legend, wasn't he?

Well, chinese collars are all the rage in NZ rugby unis, but [aside from hospo workers] I don't see people wearing them on the street...

2XS?! ZoMG, Mike West & Baldrick!

What I found most interesting in that gallery of West Ham unis was how quickly the amount of advertising on the uniforms increased once the logos began to appear.

Yup, I'm pretty sure that is a factor, and not just in New Zealand.

Except in Wellington, of course, where we want even our rugby team to wear black, thank you very much, and that time they went to the gold jerseys shall be forgotten about and never mentioned ever again, thank you.

That is absolutely correct sir. I award you five uni-points, redeemable at the merchandise table.

It's a strange one. Generally not at all. Home colours don't change too much, they just get varied in amount. But away jerseys (such as Man U's 1995 grey kit and Wellington's Super 14 kit) are often made in "go with jeans" colours.

Of course the cuts of what punters can buy is wildly different to what the players wear.

On the basis of this puppy, I hope not. I actually own this disco-collared baggy, shiny monstrosity and bring it out for very special occasions.

I like it, it's an improvement on last year's strip. If you check that link Hadyn put up, the Hammers strip between 76 and 80 looks more like a league strip that football
