I'd never heard of ARC before so thanks for the heads-up! Now I'm all signed up to his news feed I'm thinking maybe Sky should just hire Jed...
-
I'm so over Mexted's inane shit and Nisbo's bias. I was over Mexted about halfway through the first ever time I heard him.
But we will be stuck with them for at least another decade no doubt.

I had this crazy hope that with the multiple channels Sky had to devote to showing ABs games, that they might just offer the ARC some kinda dealio to do their thing.
As awesome as it was to be there live, the slight delay would annoy at least half of the people I was with whenever I watched the alternative commentary at someone's house, so having an actual proper broadcast with Jed doing commentary live over the top would have been just too awesome.
As other's have mentioned - and no doubt more will agree - a lot of the commentary we're subjected to is pretty awful. Of the bigger broadcasts the only person I like is Ian Smith.

Roy & HG used to do awesome alternative radio commentaries for State of Origin and Grand Final games.
It was very common for people to watch the Channel 9 live-feed with the sound down, and the radio commentary from Roy & HG up loud.
I'd definitely do the same for watching the All Blacks on Sky and hearing Jed's commentary if someone could make it happen.

It is broadcast through their website, but as Jimmy points out there is an annoying lag. We tried to run the game through a PVR with a 3sec delay to match it up, but it never seemed to work.

There is also the options to have multiple audio tracks on the one channel (so some shows have a track for Maori occasionally) so the alt commentary could've been on that.
It's just so annoying to see something so creative being stymied for (seemingly) narrow-minded reasons

Take Star Wars for example. George Lucas is known for being a hard-ass when it comes to copyright infringement, but if you aren't making money off of it and are just dressing up as Tauntauns in your backyard, he encourages it.
The grand-daddy of them all...

No way?! I had no idea such miraculous technology existed - alt commentary in sync on that would be the best.

I'd definitely do the same for watching the All Blacks on Sky and hearing Jed's commentary if someone could make it happen.Jed did used to do the ARC on the radio, before he made it big as a live act. He took over at Radio Active in Wellington from Sparky Plug, who is now the host of a show called Campbell Live on TV3 [you may have heard of it, or seen it]. This explained why they always had such a good rapport I think [and for a while Jed was a regular on Campbell Live doing rugby reviews].
Not to mention that that Graeme Hill used to simulcast rugby test matches on bFM in Auckland.
But thems the blows I guess, now Jed's off to colder, more miserable climes and he's traded in and traded up from Chris Rattue to Stephen Jones.

Yeah, when you watch League commentary on MY SKY you can choose between Gould and the Aussie commentators or McIvor and the Kiwi guys a lot of the time. I'd still use mute.

I'd like to call the whole 'boohoo this is unfair' thing on this, because I like the ARC and Jed's a pretty decent dude, but at the same time this is the business world and there were breaches in the copyright law.
Plus I'm annoyed that the ARC was back in town for the last two All Blacks test and didn't hold anything for it, even if it was at the Green Man with its silly laser lights and Gen-Y disco music.

By doing this, SKY has given Jed more publicity than he could’ve hoped for.
BTW, SKY did a good job of running round YouTube last Sunday tearing down all the Tua-Cameron clips.
But as Naly says, that’s just them protecting their product.

That was a mainly the fight promoters, but yeah not surprising.

Copyright is a funny thing.
Oh FFS. It's not like you're a newbie around here.

My secret shame is that I didn't read that thread

@HG,
I've got a feeling that particular shame is no longer secret

And for Formula One. I had some great nights in Melbourne watching that with my flatmate and listening to them on the Radio. I'd never been able to watch F1 before on account of the dry dullness of the commentary (not to mention the sport itself).
My secret shame is that I didn't read that thread
What mortal could?

Oh FFS. ARC is a brilliant service. They've made a martyr of Jed and will be surprised by the response.

Copyright is a funny thing. You make something, you own it.
Hmm, maybe a big legal assumption there. But yeah, it's a funny thing one way or another.

Sky may not be the bad guys here, in the sense that they have an ability to allow their footage to be posted on the interwebs,
Most of the content producers tend to slice and dice (pay/FTA/certain markets etc) what they sell, and now with the web becoming a distribution mechanism in its self, I would not be surprised if web coverage, ( live, or archived), becomes a nice little earner for the content producers.
Sky may hold not rights to coverage on the web, and would be trying not to P.O the content producers, so they can nab such rights in the future.
On the other hands, they might just be being big nasty corporate bullyboys....

"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Oooh, what thread?
For serious? It's been dormant for two months precisely as of 5:50pm (touch wood); 44 new-PAS pages and 2100-something comments - one is reluctant to speak its name . . .
-
Oooh, what thread?
I see ye be a stranger round these parts.
That be the thread whose name we dare not speak, for fear that we shall awaken A Great Evil which will destroy us all......
Edit: Lydon, what are you doing? Not the link! Nooooooo!!!!

I think of that thread as part of the Journey to the East. Many pilgrims came, and headed east or south, and then abandoned it, and spoke of it with reverence long after, of a time when many were motivated in one vast train of intellectual movement, weaving backwards and forwards like a great snake, always slightly ahead, just beyond the horizon, and finally ending at a time none could remember; perhaps it still continues out there, somewhere, in the darkness, join it if you will, you can be certain that your presence will be welcomed, your life changed, friends and enemies alike made and lost...I fell beside the way long ago, somewhere in cyberspace, lost the thread and only shadowy memories remain.

Sue,
this story is so suited for campbell live.
for the obvious reason naly-d mentioned, oh wouldn't it be great if someone had old tapes of those early days of the arc -
