I'll agree with you on Kobe.
NRL: Any player? Jesus. Probably Greg Inglis, provided he agrees to lose that pre-season weight gain.
Rugby: Any player at all? Shit. I've probably got to go with someone like Matfield in the forwards, Masaga in the backs. Masaga has been injured for weeks but still tops the linebreaks/defenders beaten stats for NZ teams.
Football: Christiano Ronaldo

As for McCullum, I don't like Australian cricketers. McCullum I picked for his consistency as a wicketkeeper and the fact that when he's on his A-Game he will kick ass, but even when he isn't he'll get around the 40's.
@Simon Telfer: To be honest I don't know why I said him. I've just got to stick with what I said on record, where he was the first name that came to my head in a situation where the others had had ten minutes to be able to think about theirs. I wanted to say Theo Walcott but couldn't remember his name [and my head doesn't work like Google]. But I've gotta stick with Crouch. He doesn't win games, but he distributes the ball and stands out in the team photo. And if the keeper gets injured, he can cover the goal in a stride. And if my NBA pick is injured, he can fill in, not as a in his position but still. And he can be a lock in my rugby team at a push.

For my teams:
Black Caps - Duminy, even though we probably need Shane Bond, or Zaheer Khan, even.
All Blacks - That Argentinian Half Back Agustín Pichot.
Tottenham - If I can't have Jurgen Klinsmann and Teddy back, then I want Messi, even though we probably *need* a centre back and 'bite yer legs' midfielder. Messi is a very Tottenham draft pick.
Chiefs - Is there a reverse draft? Can I send Luaki to the Hurricanes? Otherwise I'd like Tony Woodcock, please.
New Zealand Rugby in general - I'd like every player that's coasting over in the UK to come back and play in the NPC like they're meant to.

The NBA almost does have that. Crappy players are traded to other teams like this: if you take this guy off our hands we'll also give you this fairly good player and maybe another draft pick.

As for the McCullum v Gilchrist debate; as much as we might not like it, the last fortnight has reinforced who’s boss there.
In rugby having a decent front row is the most important thing, but it hardly brings the crowds in which is all part of a good signing.

LB - Duminy? Yeah. He dominated that SA v Aus series, with a couple of magic innings under pressure to help win the test series, and looked very at home in the one dayers and T20. He just looks bloody comformtable at the crease, he's going to score a ton of runs.
I want Woodcock 'cos the Chiefs have the flashy backline / loose fowards dept. sussed, we just can;t get the ball to them.

Dominated the SA v Aus series??? He scored one century. Up until now he has only scored that one century. Smith was the one who really dominated it.

Any proper draft and trading system you'd never draft an older player. Gilchrist's career is running down, he's moving from one year contract to one year contract. He's experience that you can buy for a season and know what you're getting.
A draft pick means that if you want, and you don't treat the player like crap, you can have them for 5 - 10 years. Gilchrist doesn't have 5 years of top cricket left in him. It'd be a waste of a draft pick.
Same reason you wouldn't draft McCaw. You'd draft Carter so that you had control over whether he fucked off to France and got injured ruling himself out of serious test matches that are coming up. And you know he'll still be playing top rugby in 5 years, McCaw probably won't.
The most interesting drafts are expansion drafts. When the NHL expanded to 30 teams, the existing 28 teams got to protect 1 goalie, 4 defenders, and 9 forwards (I think those numbers are right). That's not even a full team. The equivalent in rugby would be saying you can only protect 10 players.
The two expansion teams then got to pick from the remaining couple of hundred (previously contacted) players and negotiate for them. Some teams offered the expansion teams future draft picks in order to get agreement that they wouldn't grab their backup goalie, their 5th defender, their 4th line center etc. Talk about a scramble.

Savvy, perhaps. As far as football is concerned? No. I doubt Gerrard's own mother would pick him over Ronaldo or Messi.

I'd take Dhoni for cricket because he wins you games with the bat and seems to get the best out of teams that he captains. And I anticipate that he will be playing at a high level for the next 5 years minimum.
American Football I'd take Adrian Peterson because you need a good running back and he is still very young.
NBA, while you'd probably take LeBron if I didn't have first pick I'd take Chris Paul because he is the best point guard around and he's also very young and is only going to get better.
Football I'd take Kaka because not only is he a great player but every time he did something good the fans would get to shout "he's the shit!"

Cricket's a tough one, isn't it? It would have been so much easier just a couple of years ago to choose one of those Aussies, now even Ponting isn't rating a mention. And Tendulkar is too close to retirement. I'd just about choose Ryder - he truly is very exciting.
NFL and NBA I don't know from so many bars of soap, so I'll pick Ovechkin in the NHL.
And Messi in football, by a gnat's crochet over Ronaldo, Kaka and Ibrahimovic. I've seen Ronaldinho play all season and sorry, he's done.

Not sure if he has, but Cannavaro won the Golden boot in 2006 and that wouldn't have put him at the top of anybody's draft. Gerrard's a great player, don't get me wrong. But Ronaldo and Messi are just gearing up to their prime and are both monsters.
