Back from our Singapore sling. Here’s a few reflective shots.
Nora, the car park ones are brilliant, as are the latest Silo ones. We sure have got a lot out of that location in the past couple of years. They must have got that bit of urban landscaping right. ;-)

Then someone decided to blow up the banks…
Well, really, as you can possibly see from last last shot, it's a 'dress rehearsal' for National day on 9th August. They practice by getting all the local school children to come along and sing all the songs, and enjoy the spectacle of the fireworks, etc, in the weekends leading up to the actual day.
Costly little exercise, I would imagine.

And Jackson, your Singapore shots remind me of arriving in Hong Kong the first time. I made the mistake of taking the train from the airport to Central, but it was a happy mistake because I suddenly felt like I'd accidentally stepped into a sci-fi film set 100 years in the future.

The cut off version plays nice tricks.... do those sort of clouds normally sit on the 'horizon' like they appear to here?
Not a reflection, but more cloud.... Longhorn Cattle with saddle bags?

That must have been quite a shock Hilary. I've seen a lot of photos which make me thankful it happened on a weekend, not in the middle of a busy working day. Lots of shelves and other things that thankfully fell into uninhabited spaces.

I was sort of prepared as I looked into some other offices first, but I must admit to a sharp intake of breath on seeing the scale in our little space. The building itself was fine (as were most offices - this was one of the worst affected) but it is on reclaimed land which seems a bit shakier than at my house on the hill, where we only had a couple of minor things fall off shelves. Two colleagues down the corridor were there during the event itself and found shelter under their desks. The mess is really only paper with the odd displaced wooden shelf, computer monitor and file drawer.
But what I don't like are the ongoing little shakes, which hopefully are slowing down now. How did Christchurch people endure them for all those months?
On the positive side it has made people much more aware of the need to have good processes and preparedness.

Yeah, me too, it just reinforced a nightmare I've always had about the Big One hitting Wellington at lunchtime on a warm, sunny weekday. In so many ways Wellington is a crazy place to build a city, and yet, even if we were to move the capital we'd still need a city there. What alternative port is there in the southern North Island?

Yeah, apparently it had my Dad scrounging around for vessels to store water in. We never bothered with an emergency kit when I was a kid. Everybody knew the Big One would hit Wellington eventually and talked openly about the possibility, but I guess we were all just fatalistic about it.

When it's very rocky (ie 4s and 5+ for months and months), we go into survival mode. Our jaws set, we stay as close to our kids and home as possible. From my far-off observations, Wellington is not at that stage; Seddon/Blenheim is closer.
On the positive side it has made people much more aware of the need to have good processes and preparedness.
Yeah; then the teenager eats the doom-box.
