Maybe it's time for a cheer-up.
We were lucky here in Chch to be visited by Michael Parekowhai's amazing bronze bull-and-piano sculptures from the installation On First Looking into Chapman's Homer.
They sat on the corner of Madras and Armagh Sts, on a bumpy uneven demolition site among the remains of the central city.
I saw them on their final weekend, on a sunny Winter afternoon. There were throngs of well-dressed people milling about admiring the artworks, chatting together, taking photos of each other with the bulls, and generally having a lovely time.

The bronze bulls are massive, life-sized.

And for all their mass, quietly expressive.

People passing along Madras St were all craning their necks.

There was a very socia-bull atmosphere.

This bull seemed to be dancing in the slanting sunlight.

What more dramatic backdrop for your wedding pictures?

Upstairs at the Ng Gallery across the street is Michael Parekowhai’s Story of a New Zealand River , a functioning Steinway piano, intricately carved.
It was played by a rota of pianists all the time the exhibit was open. The large room was full of rippling and cascading sound.

I sat and looked and listened and tried not to cry. The music was so voluptuous and beautiful.

And the piano itself was so amazing it was hard to take in.

It made other people quite emotional, too.

Time to go home, back through the scarred city. Madras St.
