That all worked well Hilary - the pupae are just in the initial stages of pupation , so excellent to see - thank you! And everyone else, especially for the flower photos-

a cerise and deep blue bush growing side by side--which ought not happen as acidic soils produce one colour and alkaline soils produce the other.
I used to have a bush that flowered blue tinged with pink. I assume it was a special variety that did that!

You’re both right. There are hydrangea species in which pH affects flower colour (most notably H. macrophylla), but there is some genetic diversity in baseline colour within those species, and there are also other species with different flower colours (including white).

Love that hydrangea pic. I’d never really appreciated them until the first of the two amazingly atmospheric rain scenes in My Neighbour Totoro.
And his stunning azaleas, or maybe rhododenrons, as seen above from Spirited Away. -
Another one, of the Renaissance Garden. If you have never visited the Hamilton Gardens, you ought to. Something quite extraordinary wandering from the English Garden, to the Japanese Garden, to the American Modernist Garden to the Italian Garden to the Maori Garden. Three new areas are being built: Surrealist Garden, Tudor Garden and Tropical Garden. Wonderful productive/sustainable gardens too.

Oh yeah, Totoro! The landscape in that was the biggest star. (BTW your link is broken) Also Arrietty (you may wish to mute the sound to avoid the vomit-inducing rhyming voice-over).

Meant to credit background artist/director Kazuo Oga.

The Totoro pic or the Spirited Away .gif? Both seem OK here.
Yeah the Arrietty voiceover is awful. The voice dubs of the Ghibli/Miyazaki films have been pretty immaculately done in the past.
Geoff Lealand: Those gardens look stunning. I remember in the early 90s there was an attempt by religious fundies to have human-sized statues of Ancient Egyptian deities removed from a Hamilton public gardens. I seem to recall that the Council caved in. From the photo I recall they looked pretty nice. Hope they made it back at some point.

I think this is the fault of the trailer, not the film. It seems to be pitched at 2-year-olds! But the film itself is much smarter.
The Totoro link gives me a stern error-message to "use the share links".

Me too. Maybe we’re not in Kansas anymore, Totoro?
Hah! Or, indeed, in Africa.
ETA: Would Russell Brown look like that guy if he grew a beard?

Ah.
Nice Totoro pic with atmospheric hydrangeas. Click to enlarge. -

They are still there, down the Camellia Walk and at the head of the pool where the entrances to the Chinese, Japanese, English, American, Indian and Italian gardens begin. Much posing for photo ops going on around them yesterday.

It was gay.

Flowering plants are hermaphroditic, y'know. :-)
I have some nice photos of the blue/pink hydrangea, but I ended up using them for work so can't post them here. But the web provides other examples. -

Oh Geoff - that is wonderful! I look forward to decking it in person.

All it needs is a few mirror balls and a gin. Tres gay.

The garden needs bears, surely.

You're not talking about a teddy-bears' picnic, are you?
