This pohutukawa has gold sparkles all through the flowers, even on a cloudy day

    Aaaaaah : ) Beauty.

And most impressed with Wellington Central Oriental Bay Pohutukawa - who knew they could be so restrained?

Coromandel pohutukawa seemed especially vivid this year. So much so, that I took a specific photo of the redified beach.

Meola Road. Pohutukawa blooms lie in drifts in the gutters; the confetti of yesterday’s parade.

    drain nadir…

Pohutukawa blooms lie in drifts in the gutters

    Stamen down,
    a brush with death
    stay man, down
    sprinkled with spray
    Tawhaki’s blood clogs the gutter
    running back to the sea…

...and let's not forget the Masons...

Interesting that the metrosideros used to be a favoured street tree in San Francisco but it is now regarded as a pest as it is so disruptive of underground utilities.

Funny you say that. I was just busy ring barking some Monterey pines, becouse they have been over shadowing the young Pohutukawa trees up the hill. I will However, leave the big unpruned parent Monterey, unharmed. We like to have a bit of California, in our own back yard.

I suspect that damage done by tree roots seeking water lies behind much drain repairing around Wellington and elsewhere.

It struck me the angles on our consecutive shots were uncannily in-sync. So I did a twiddly thing. Not sure it works, but it's Friday, I'm on holiday, and Photoshop was open.

    Happy Newness!
