    Rotoiti (St Arnaud)

    Nice. Some symmetry. ;-)

My mountains are more symmetrical. ;-p
    Such different countryside though, eh?
And within Nelson Lakes, Rotoiti is a different world to Rotoroa, although they're geographically so close. Rotoroa's wet and jungly, Rotoiti's much drier and more like the rest of Marlborough. Together they feed the mighty Buller.

It would be nice if I'd scanned some pics of Rotoroa but I seem not to have...

Oh OK I have one, but it's not of the lake. Rotoroa forest. The photo doesn't do it justice...you gotta imagine the patter and drip of constant gentle rain.

Hardly anyone around, just the tall trees and the soft rain and the bloody sandflies biting.

Ha! I knew that looked familiar. Here’s a couple I prepared earlier.

    2nd one a bit wonky.

    Heh! :-)

Did you go to the mouth of the Buller? Where the quiet lake turns into a rushing roaring torrent? It’s awesome.

Edit: sorry I don't mean mouth I mean...where the river starts. The source? The origin?

  • JacksonP,

Unfortunately not. We went to Blenheim after that, and into a few vineyards. Lovely place to drive around.

And Lilith, what a bee-utiful beach and poem that is... so blown away, grey and sea-misty.

Amazing photos on this thread, everyone, I forgot to subscribe to it so have been missing seeing them being published!

And an ice rink, of sorts… well-frozen lake/pond stumbled upon in Lewis Pass.

I think I know just the one! Here in summer, unfrozen. Technically a tarn I think. ;-)

    Edit: I like body-of-water snap.

Nice! Looks very different in summer. We were surprised- and a little delighted :) - to find such thick ice.

Lake Taharoa, near Dargaville, is one of my favourites. One of the clearest lakes in NZ, due to its sandy substrate and lack of surface inflows.

Ok, anyone got any of this one? Lake Hayes, I think. Above Queenstown.

    Above Queenstown ;-)
from the Remarkables Skifield road. Lake Hayes and the Kawerau, in Summer.

BTW lots of great views from that road, better than from the Queenstown gondola, and it’s free!

All these watery images remind me of a photo story I have about the morning we went down to the beach after a very chilly and snowy night. The swell out in the open sea was really moving, but I didn't check the web for a reading before we went down there, an error I will not repeat - I had a bad fright, but did get some good photographs... The full story is here:
Watery safety ~ check those swells and surges!
