A ruru recently stayed in a tree marked for felling at my flat and reminded me how much I like them so they got my vote. Since then the universe has conspired to prevent the tree removed and that's fine with us both.

Magnificent! Often seen them like this at Moeraki - but that's the first time I've seen a photo-

Oh! That reminds me – has anyone ever seen/heard of a ruru dead from gripping a branch so hard its claws got impaled?
There’s one in my apple tree which I only noticed the other day (a day after I got home from a fortnight in Oamaru…) I cannot understand how it ended up like that… Actually, I think I will just ring FJG DoC and get them on to it.

They can fly!! :
An albatross can spend literally weeks on the wing....
Swim, dive to depths humans cant; have always, in all sane human societies, been reguarded as prognisticators/diviners/helpmates; can walk further & faster than we can, and show every variant of marriage & parenthood (and a few quite beyond!*) as mammals - including us!*Dunno of any human society that buries its potential young in dung hills, considerately within the the chicks' initial digging strength, breath-holding potential and directional capability...
I can think of quite a few groups of humans I'd love to see try that last caper-

Ahhh! We have those on the lagoon!
The official word is they were Acclimitisation society releases - the fact is they were self-introduced... -

Love that pose! Can we bury our nose/mouth in plummage along our spine?
Naah.
We're apes.
We can lick genitala and put our toes in our mouths - so can a huge number of mammals - but dorsal manouvres?
Fergeddit. -
