I found hanging a kiwifruit-bag of lard in a tree brought the silvereyes to the garden , and they stayed to eat all the tasty aphids! Win/win!

Late figs have been ripening over the last few days – surely more appealing than an old bag of lard to a flock of silvereyes?
Here’s a fig being finished off in this morning’s sun, against textured alder foliage in its muted autumn colours.To which a silvereye is remarkably well matched.

It happens I have a photographic record of this particular fig and its stem through most of autumn – this was the

11 days later on 5 May – all the leaves are gone …
on that stem at least. What is to become of the leftover green fig? No ripening seemed to be taking place anywhere else on the tree over ten days or more – it seems they were stranded too late in the season? -
10 May – the stem stiffens, moves across to its neighbour with a new golden glove seeming ready to catch the fig if it falls.
But no, those leaves fell instead.
The bare branches carry the bud of next season’s growth. -
Then over the last few days, ripening restarts, this fig fattens and colours up – here yesterday morning through my kitchen window against a window through the alder foliage to the hillslope beyond. A silvereye visited to check it out purposefully, prompting my non-silver-based photographic eye to record a baseline image for the day.
Three hours later it was raining, the silvereyes need fuel.
Really it’s much more convenient and energy-efficient with those leaf-platforms to stand on while feeding.

So back to the beginning, finishing the job off in the sun this morning, and by lunchtime that last bit is hardly worth the trouble. Again showing against the window through the alder.

Lots of bubbles on a wobble! Here's one or two (this was all in 20 minutes this afternoon so I'll be trying more). Some have a down-a-tunnel effect from not zooming the lens enough. The spiky one is my cat's fur
