Te Ati Awa and confusion with Ngati Awa - a period thing that easily persists, got slapped down myself for that mistake twice, learnt eventually. Cowan's NZ Wars is of its (1920s) period for the most part, very useful on detail, not so much the bigger picture and context.
This section of Waitangi Tribunal report summarises the mainly 19th century history behind the iwi residing in the greater Wellington region in the 1840s - all is clear ;-)

Hollis Henry where are you...?
One way would be 'augmented reality' tech...
I can't wait till we get the Locative media applications going here... I first read about it in William Gibson's Spook Country (also mentioned again in the new follow up Zero History )
whoaah - Have just felt another jolting aftershock (only 3.9 and those 3 close, shallow ones last night were doozies!) it has triggered the thought that hopefully someone will archive the existing Google Earth Street View for Christchurch - that is a ready made historic augmented reality overlay for whatever replaces our edifice wrecks...
who would ya suggest that to? -
That has to be your best/worst pun yet Ian D!

That was a background report before the Tribunal completed its inquiry - you can read some relevant sections of the actual Tribunal report here and here. And Ian Wards's book The Shadow of the Land, which is one of the sources Witi Ihimaera does acknowledge in The Trowenna Sea, is also worth reading on the Wellington war.

Yes!
Was thinking the same thing meself, while looking for a cobbler in Chch (they've been hard- hit) and after locating "Paragon Shoe Repairs" on google earth, drove past its ruins...
They should also do another run-past fast, before the restoration begins in earnest. A 'before, during and after' set would be fascinating.
There are many 'ghost buildings' in Chch; buildings still there in their absence. (The "Victorian" is one of my personal spooks, when in the vicinity.) This new crop is dismaying: a pictorial remembrance would be great.
Funny thought, though: how does one 'talk to google'? -
merc,
http://www.gearthblog.com/ they have done a neat project on showing photos of blitz bombed streets overlaid with the same streets today, might be what you are looking for for ChCh.
Oops here, http://flowingdata.com/2010/09/22/history-of-the-blitz-bombings/
